We took the Major Marine day tour in Jun 2010 which was about 8 hours. It was a great experience and saw several humpback whales including a calf and its mom. The baby breached about 9 times so we were lucky to see that. Also saw seals, sheep, otters, sea lions, several Bald eagles and got really close to the glacier.

There are several good companies in Seward (based on reviews in TA)who provide tours with different offerings. Our tour included a salmon and prime rib dinner which was very nice. MM also has reserved seating which was nice for our family. There is no guarantee you will see whales but the tour operators usually can spot them if they are out there.

The best tip I can think of is to take dramamine at least a 1/2 hour before the ride. And mind what you eat for breakfast. Then go stand on the deck of the smallest boat you can find to take you out.

We went with the "Captain's Choice" tour from Kenai Fjords
