Alaska Sealife Center - Behind the Scenes Tour

Hello everyone- Just looking for experiences on the Behind the Scenes Tour at the Alaska Sealife Center. How was it, would you do it again, worth the additional price, how long did it take, etc. Thanks in advance.

Hi La medic,

Seward medic here, I live in Seward and work in the Kenai Fjords National Park guiding. We and other guiding companies send our guides through the Sea Live Centers behind the scenes tour, it is really revealling as well as educational, and a must see tour. The Sea Life Center here is a rehab and research facility, loaded with specialists in all types of marine and bird wildlife bioligist experts.

They have mated eiders for the first time in captivity successfully, and have many ongoing marine wildlife studies trying to figure out the many issues affecting Stellar Sea Lions, Harbor seals, Eiders, Puffins, and many others.

Yep, I dont think you will be disappointed.

Also, there are some great hiking trails here to check out, and they are free!

Happy Travels,

Rick

Hello Seward medic, wow I would love to see what life was like for you guys up there! We are booked with Renown Tours on a Kenai Fjords boat tour on August 21st. I think I will go ahead and book the behind the scenes tour, sounds like it would be a good experience. Thanks for all of the advice!

Hi lamedic91

Another few behind the scenes goodies that the SeaLife Center offers:

The Behind the Scenes tour is about an hour and takes you to the lab area so you get a more in-depth feel for the research that takes place and how the building operates etc.

Puffin Encounter: $79 - an hour behind the scenes with the bird crew and includes feeding the puffins

Octopus Encounter: $79 - same story but with fish and octopus etc.

Puffin Experience: about $25 - an hour interactive program including meeting a puffin or two - only on Thursdays.

Avian Embassador Program: free on weekends - 30 minute presentation including meeting a bird (not always a puffin).

The Behind the Scenes Tour is 75 minutes. You should then allow at least an extra hour to look around from what I have been told.
