The Big Island

How many hours would it take to drive around The Big Island?

That is not counting stops, we will factor that in ourselves. What I want to know is normal driving conditions to drive the circumference of the island.

Well, the Big Island is BIG! After many trips we have never attempted a full curcumnavigation in one day...it just seemed a bit nuts to even try!

Should you try it there will be no time for any stops of any kind!

Probably 6 hours on the main routes. More taking side roads nearer the coast in Puna or up towards Hawi.

You can't drive the circumference, or even close. You can drive around Hwy 19 and Hwy 11 but that doesn't include large portions of the Puna and Kau districts or North Kohala. Those are separate segments. Driving around from Kailua Kona past VNP to Hilo up to Hamakua over to the Kohala Coast and back to Kailua Kona, which wouldn't include the aforementioned areas or the interior of the island, would take you approximately 6 hours as 3chis notes, if you hit no traffic, big trucks, army convoys, roadwork, or weather and did a little above the speed limit. In reality it would probably be more like 7.

I'd say about 8 hours.

But that's now how you explore The Big Island.

As noted, you wouldn't be driving the coastline if you did this. For large areas you would be driving inland, and only by taking side routes could you say you had seen the main roads on the island. The Belt Highway is just a belt; it's not the body.

The biggest circle - the closest thing to driving "around" Hawaii Island - is about 230 miles and would take about 7 hours to complete without any stops. (It takes three days for the Ultraman competitors to bike and run it).
