 state park campgrounds

Any advice on what the best campground to reserve in Custer State Park, we are traveling with a 26foot travel trailer, two small children looking for some swimming, clean, we like semi-private sites with treesand natural beauty. Not fans of RV parks

I think youcan call Custer Park. We travel thur , but wished we would have had more time. The buffalo were right up to the car- awesome to see them and the open spaces. Ok we arecitypeople, taken with the priarie dogs too. Everything looked great out there. We were in Radipcity so staying in Custer will be beautiful. We ate at one of the places in the park..Im forgetting the name now,. .. Good luck.

Try and see what might be available near Sylvan Lake, just inside Custer State Park. Try this website: sdgfp.info/Parks/…sylvlkinfo.htm

or http://www.custerresorts.com/lodge.asp?id=2

Custer State Park is in the middle of the Black Hills near Mount Rushmore. It includes Needles Highway, Cathedral Spires, Iron Mountain Road and a wildlife trail that includes buffalo and prairie dogs.

Due to low and narrow road tunnels on Highway 87 (Needles Highway), Large RV's and trucks use Highway 89. The junction of Highway16A and Highway 89 is located on the east side of the City of Custer, SD.

I used to work at Custer State Park as a ranger, and I would recommend either Center Lake campground for seclusion and swimming, Bluebell campground for scenery and seclusion, or Game Lodge campground for easy access to other areas in the Black Hills. I would recommend to stay clear of Sylvan Lake campground--too crowded and always noisy. Nice for a few hours at the lake but that's about it.

FOr a great day trip if you stay at Bluebell: Wake up early and take the Wildlife Loop road which is one mile south of the campground on Highway 87 and is your best opportunity to see buffalo, antelope and other wildlife. It's a 16 mile road, but expect to take up to an hour on it. If you have the proper vehicle, take some of th CSP roads within the Loop road area. They are dirt roads that are marked and your chance of seeing more wildlife is better here. Get a map at the entrance booth.

After you exit the Loop road on the east side (by Game Lodge Campground) take Highway 16A east to the entrance booth and turn north on the Iron Mountain Road and head up to Mt. Rushmore. A beautiful and winding drive and you will be able to see Mt. Rushmore thought the 3 tunnels that are on the road. Beautiful.

Have a great time no matter what you do or where you stay.

We have a 27 foot trailer, and 2 kids and 2 well behaved dogs. Are going middle of August. Wanted to know how your trip went. Coming from California. Any advice that you learned from your trip? Thanks.
