Good eats in Custer

I'll be camping just West of Custer towards the end of September. We are coming out for bowhunting season.

Any locals have good places to eat?

We'll be eating in camp and in the woods most of the time, but we'll have a couple of breakfasts and a few dinners in town. Nothing fancy, just good food.

We may spend a Sunday afternoon in town, IF we can find a place to watch the Packers. Any ideas where to catch those games?

Thanks in advance,

You might try the Buglin' Bull for sports -- they switched this restaurant over to a sports venue a couple years ago - lots of TV's, though we found the food and service to be a bit "hit and miss" last year.

There are a number of decent places to eat in Custer. We like the Dakota Cowboy and Baker's Cafe. For something light, try the Purple Pie Place (as the name suggests, they're known for pies, but have a small food menu, too). The Wrangler is worth a try (seems to be a favorite among the locals). None of this is five star, but it's not the usual franchise stuff, either. Casual and not expensive.

If you make it into Custer State Park, all four of the resorts (Sylvan Lake, Legion Lake, Blue Bell and Game Lodge) have good restaurants. Legion Lake's is more of a "lunch all day" cafe while the other three have pretty extensive dinner menus complete with wine lists ($$$).

We've always had good meals at the Bavarian Inn's German restaurant. They have American selections as well but the German items were very good.

The Purple Pie Place in Custer is good for a light snack, but I'd suggest making the short drive to Hill City and dining at the Alpine Inn for lunch or dinner.
