New Orleans February Trip

It looks like Mardi Gras is April 17th, 2015 and we are planning on arriving the 19th...will it still be crazy or will it have died down a little by then? Thanks!

Nope. It's February 17th. But assuming that was just a typo and you knew that....Mardi Gras ends on...Mardi Gras. Fat Tuesday. Over, finsihed, done.

Does that mean you won't have a good time showing up a couple days later? No. There will be stuff going on, and other visitors in town.

Mardi Gras will come to a complete and screeching halt between sundown and midnight on Fat Tuesday, February 17, 2015, the day before Ash Wednesday (the beginning of Lent). Ash Wednesday the 18th will be somewhat quiet and solemn, by New Orleans standards; with the exception of beads still hanging from the some of the trees, it will almost be like Mardi Gras never happened. Thursday evening the 19th things will start getting back to normal for New Orleans, and will stay that way until the St. Patrick's and St. Joseph's festivities begin. But there's always something happening in New Orleans.

We'll all still be feeling like this, even 2 days after Mardi Gras.

But you can still have a good trip!

Any hotel suggestions either in French Quarter or very close?

There will be very little in the way of barricades or trash by Wednesday noon, although the service industry workers will be moving pretty slow.

The TYPICAL first time visitor will want lodging in or very close to the French Quarter. Would you prefer a larger "full service" hotel or a smaller "boutique"? Because of the close proximity of restaurants, bars and shops in the French Quarter, having these amenities within the hotel itself is not as critical as may otherwise be the case. Something having a more "modern" motif, or something more "NewOrleanish"? Luxury, economy, or middle of the road? Any particular attractions of interest (may have a bearing on location)? In the middle of the action or tucked away? Any particular required amenities? Clean and reasonably well maintained goes without saying. What are your precise dates of arrival and departure?

We aren't picky, but you are correct that we would prefer a hotel in the French Quarter or very close. Probably not looking to spend the $$ on a luxury, $400+ per night hotel. I would say anything in that $250 per night or less range would be fine. We don't need any specific amenities. We arrive Thu Feb 17th and staying for 3 nights. Thanks!

Just GLANCING at kayak.com, you shouldn't have much problem securing quality lodging for three nights commencing the 19th (not the 17th) for under $250 per night before tax. Depending on your specific preferences, check out Hotel Le Marais (my current all around favorite), Place d'Armes (very "NewOrleanish"), Courtyard Iberville (the "suite" rooms are very nice), French Market Inn, Bienville House, Hyatt French Quarter, Hotel Provincial, or Hotel St Marie. You may want to avoid the tiny "petite" rooms and/or the windowless "interior" rooms. If you have specific questions or concerns, feel free to express them to the Forum.

I think we have settled on Hotel Le Marais. Any suggestions on things to do. We would like to do some type of ghost/haunted house tour, anyone been on a fun/scary one?
