Staying in Garden District -- Car rental?

Hi all,

I will be staying at a friend's home in the Garden District and using that as a home base to explore the city. Does it make sense to rent a car for 2 days? Or will cabs, etc., suffice?

Thank you!

I would ask your friend. If the house is close to St Charles Ave, you can use the Streetcar to get to the French Quarter, and use cabs to get back if it is late (streetcars are less frequent as it gets later). Cabs are reasonably priced.

We have only stayed in the Garden District once (on St. Charles) and didn't move the car for 4 days. During the day, we rode the streetcar and in the evening we either walked to dinner or took a cab if we were going to the Quarter. Parking and traffic in the Quarter would make me want to take the streetcar or cab regardless of the cost.

Visiting with wheelchair user (should've mentioned that at start) so streetcar not an option. Does this change anything? Or is it easy enough to call cabs to that area?

Thanks!

You are right, the St Charles streetcar is not wheelchair friendly. But cabs are easy to call, and still are likely your best bet.

If you have a handicapped placard back home, find out whether Louisiana recognizes out of state ones. Then parking will be easier so the car will make sense.

Call United Cab (504-522-9771) and they can dispatch a handicap accessible taxi. They're one of the more reliable cab companies.

Then if you like the cab driver, just get his cell # so he can be your personal cab driver for the weekend.

Do not attempt driving/parking/navigating the French Quarter. Sometimes you have to park many blocks away from your destination. Let the cabs do the driving.

Hope you enjoy your trip!
