Side trip from the French Quarter in NOLA

After receiving many recommendation's for Ashton's in NOLA, we

have booked a room for 5 nights in March. But our trip extends another three nights. Any suggestions for a side visit either in or around NOLA or somewhere on the Gulf Coast? We can rent a car and don't mind a short road trip but accomodations's need to be excellent like Ashton's in NOLA. We'd like a change of pace from the French Quarter, maybe long walks on beautiful beaches in a quaint Gulf Coast town?

With gratitude,

i vote for breaux bridge in the heart of cajun country! we're staying at the Country Charm Bed and Breakfast in the precious past suite, in the area. the place we're staying at has a private lake with a pier, a communal bbq pit and a firepit by the lake. it's close to lafayette too if you wanted to have a visit.

given your choice for ashton's though, you may like Isabelle Inn Bed & Breakfast better. it's a family run B&B and gets continually good reviews but we found it too expensive for our budget:)

if you've thought about trying crawfish, this is the crawfish capital...it's also a great place to discover cajun music...cafe des amis has a zydeco breakfast every saturday morning with live music, there's a great walkable area with antique stores, and Cajun Country Swamp Tours runs an eco tour of the bayou teche which is a little safer and humane than the airboat tours. it's done on a crawfish boat and won the trip advisor award of excellence.

it gets continuously glowing reviews. the bed and breakfast we're staying at recommended it because they don't use tricks like feeding marshmallows to alligators and the guides grew up in the area and are very knowledgeable.

We went to that area as a side trip from NO and had a great time. We stayed in a cabin on a small lake outside of town - Cajun Country Cabins - which was fun. We loved the Breaux Bridge and New Iberia areas. A swamp tour on Lake Martin is a great way to see the flora and fauna of the area.
