What are forum guidelines? The best is the Hotel Monteleone on Royal st.
Edited: 11 years agoI don't know that there is a "best". It really depends on budget, what you're planning on doing, what size room(s) you need, time of year...
Stay in the FQ and walk to all the great places to visit. Stay at Chateau Bourbon, Le Marais, Mazarin, Provincial, St. Marie, Place D Armes, Iberville Suites, Monteleone, Dauphine Orleans or Prince Conti.

Thank you, we are looking to be close to everything. We are mainly looking at safe and family friendly.
Cheddar, it very much depends on when you are going and your price range.
and the quantity/ages of kids
I agree that it's impossible to say what's best. Depends on your wants/needs, your budget, your comfort level with being around more adult-type activities despite having kids (you didn't mention ages), etc.
Having said this, I don't think you can go wrong with the Hiltons, Marriotts, Sheratons, etc. If these are out of the price range, the new Hyatt, Drury Inn and Le Pavillon are a bit less expensive.
For both "close to everything" and "safe and family friendly", I'd look within the area bounded by the River, Canal St., Royal St. and Ursulines Ave., including both sides of the boundary streets. Place d'Armes is a favorite "NewOrleanish boutique" choice on this Forum. Omni Royal Orleans is a large "full service" hotel offering maybe the best location and swimming pool in the City. For something more modern in a very family friendly setting there is Westin at Canal Place. Hotel Monteleone is a good all around "full servive" choice.
The "regulars" on this forum will all offer sound advice, and all have their favorites. Mine is the Place d'Armes, on St. Ann at Chartres, on the corner with Jackson Square. That's not to say anything is wrong with someone else's favorite. Simply consider your preferences, and select accordingly. Do not fret about making a wrong choice of those recommended. As long as you are in the Quarter, you'll be alright.
