Where to stay outside of New Orleans?

Just preparing a surpirse trip for my parents to New Orleans in late September. I know they will enjoy the city, but they also like to see something of the countyside around it. Where does one recommend a good hotel say even as far as 80 miles outside the city? Are there any hotels in the style of grand colonial houses? Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

You might want to book a night at Nottaway Plantation. You will be in the heart of Plantation country, and near the great Cabin Restaurant.

You will also be close to Baton Rouge, the State Capital, and may want to do a little sightseeing around there.

The other option would be to spend a night on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Biloxi, Gulfport. A great little town is Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. The coast drive is beautiful with the old homes, etc. Of couse, there are now lots of casinos.

You might want to consider Victoria Inn in Lafitte. It is an absolutely beautiful bed and breakfast with very congenial hosts. It is about 45 minutes away from New Orleans. To get there from New Orleans you pass thru several fishing villages, moss-covered trees, etc. Lots of atmosphere but still close to New Orleans. They serve a great breakfast and are very reasonably priced. Their website is victoriainn.com.

You may want to consider the Northshore of New Orleans, just 30 minutes north of the city, yet quiet and more laid back to the heart of the city. The Slidell and surrounding areas are also interesting areas to visit with vast nature perserves, swamp tours, quaint shops. It is also only 30 minutes to the Mississippi beaches, and 50 minutes to some of the area plantations.

Woodridge Bed and Breakfast (www.woodridgebb.com) is a great place to call home for a stay in the area. You can view their reviews on this site.

You might check some of the B&B sights. There are some that offer lodging at some of the older colonial houses you seek.

Historiclodging.com, nolab&b, bedandbreakfast.com, www.innlife.com. Cajinwave posted a few others earlier. I'll see if I can find them and get back to you

bedandbreakfast.com is a pretty good site for B&Bs.

In New Orleans, www.bbnola.com and www.neworleansinns.com.

Also, the Louisiana B&B Association site is www.louisianabandb.com. I had to look that one up!
