Feb 14 - 21 - too crowded?? |
|
We're thinking of celebrating our anniversary in NOLA, the week of Feb. 14 - 21, the week before Mardi Gras. How is the French Quarter that week? Is it too crowded? We've only been there once before, five years ago. But that year it happened to be the week after Mardi Gras. I don't mind crazy, but don't really like crowds. |
|
If you don't like crowds, this may not be the time for you. There are parades on the 14th and 15th, as well as the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st. The city will be crowded the first weekend and a madhouse the last few days of your trip.

I actually disagree. The parades on the 14th and 15th are smaller "family" parades. No parades on 16th or 17th then evening-only parades on Wed, Thurs and Fri. The larger Mardi Gras crowds don't arrive until the 20th and 21st. It's kind of general perception that Mardi Gras is wall-to-wall people in the city. It isn't. Sure, crowds are large and traffic can be challenging but you can still get hotel rooms, you can still walk the streets safely and easily (Bourbon excepted!) and it's a heck of a lot of fun! I'd go for it. You'll see great evening parades when you want and the daytime hours of your proposed dates will be "just like normal."

I agree-you get the best of both worlds, evening parades if you wish to see them, and active but not overly crowded places to go. laissez les bon temps rouler!

I agree with CajunWave. The week before Mardi Gras is a great time to visit the city and still experience the Mardi Gras spirit without the super, huge crowds. I often have extended family in town for that time period, and we're able to get around fairly easily. I'd recommend coming down. It'll be crowded, but it's not that bad, especially during the weekdays.

Don't get me wrong, I love the weekend before Mardi Gras! This is when my husband and I prefer to visit to get the fun of Mardi Gras without all the drunken frathouse mentality. The mood is much more jovial, IMHO. I posted as I did because I have friends who truly do not like crowds and did not enjoy themselves during this time. Of course, that may have just been them. :) As always, take my advice with a grain of salt.

Finally booked our trip. We're staying at Wyndham Avenue Plaza Feb. 6 -13. We're planning on the Katrina Tour, Preservation Hall, Cafe du Monde, lots of French Quarter evenings. Perhaps a plantation tour. Any other recommendations? We love live music, outdoor activities. Five years ago we took a bicycle tour with Laid Back Tours. I don't think that they are still in business. Is there anything similar around?
