We visited No June 6-10. When we arrived it was raining but by the time we got to the hotel & got settled it had stopped. We took a nice ride on the St. charles Streetcar with a very colorful driver to Jacques Imos. Had the fried green tomatoes with shrimp, Escolour (sp?), blackened redfish & the catfish stuffed with crab. All YUMMY!
Next morning we took a city tour with New Orleans Tours & saw some parts of the city wouldn't normally have. Stops included St Louis Cemetery#3 & Longue Vu House. Spent the afternoon touring the French Quarter stopping in shops and the market along the way. Also went to Cafe Du Monde & although not what I was expecting they were good. Had lunch at Johnny Po'Boys & dinner at Acme Oyster & Seafood.
After dropping mom off at the hotel we went to Bourbon, got our drinks & started our stroll & people watching, very entertaining. We stopped at different windows to watch the bands & the "singers" at Cat's Meow. Stopped in at one place for a while but can't remember the name of it now. Back on the street we had a little run in with the mounted police. One of the horses stepped on my sister's foot. The cop was very nice & apologetic, although she has broke that foot a couple of times was lucky to get away with a very lg bruise & some swelling. So by the time we did our sightseeing in the daytime for the rest of our trip her foot would be sore & swollen so that was our one & only trip to Bourbon at night.
Wed we went down to the riverfront to walk around took a ride over on the ferry. We then wandered the Riverwalk & had an early lunch in the food court. Not a normal food court lots of good selections.
In the afternoon we went on a plantation/swamp tour with Louisiana Swamp Tours. We went to the Destrhan Planation & then on to the swamp. We took the slow moving boat & enjoyed it very much. There was only 8 of us on the boat (4:30 tour) so we were able to freely move around the boat & ask the guide any questions. We were also very lucky since it started raining just as we got in van at Plantation & stopped by time got to swamp & then started pouring when we left swamp.
That night we ate at Coop's Place, definitely not a place you would think to go into for dinner but the food was great!
Thurs we took the Canal streetcar up to the City Park where we walked through the Bestoff Sculture Gardens & the Botanical Gardens. (It was extremely hot) In the afternoon we decided to do an indoor activity so we toured the aquarium. It is very good with a wide range of species, a couple I had never seen before & being a licensed scubadiver I've seen lots. We had sat down to rest for a couple of minutes in front of the lg sharktank with other lg fish & were surprised with divers cleaning the windows.
That night we went to Voodoo BBQ in the FQ. On our walk back to hotel we were treated to great entertainment by a band of 10 young guys playing sax, tromobones drums etc on corner of Bourbon & Canal. They were great & we gladly dropped $ in their bucket.
We stayed at the Drury Inn on Poydras & found the hotel to be a great value, easy access to FQ & streetcars. We had a 1bedroom king suite with pullout sofa although almost windowless it was a good size. The breakfast in morning was a good start to the day. They also have happy hour from 5:30 - 7, we were around for it twice. Each person gets 3 drink tickets, the drinks are strong, 3/4 of glass was tequila, a little strong for me so I mixed it with more sprite & it was a refreshing drink. They also had nachos, chips & other snacks. Would recommend this hotel with no problem.
We enjoyed all the places we ate at, tried pecan pie & bread pudding with white chocolate & bread pudding with rum sauce.
Since safety & city cleanliness were big topics of conversations before I left would like to touch on them briefly. We were only pestered for money twice, once when got off streetcar to go to Jaques Imos & other time outside of Cornstalk Inn, that time i had walked on ahead so if hadn't been alone he probably wouldn't have bothered me. Both when told no moved on eventually. I never felt unsafe, we took cabs back to hotel after dark but it was only 6 or so $'s even from Decateur. The city to me smells like a lg city in the summer, but never saw any dead rats & luckly not even any puke.
We enjoyed our trip & definitely would return.
