things to do at Christmas

Hi.. we will be in Madison over the holidays (Dec 22-30) and would like to know if there are any activites or things going on at that time that would be fun. Also, if there is snow during that time, is there anywhere to go to showshoe? thanks!

Looks like you will be leaving before the city-wide New Year's Eve festivities. But you can take in the holiday decorations at Olbrich Gardens - they will probably have the model train set up and running amongst the pines and poinsettas and addition to the usual botanical garden. State Street is always lively and most of the students will be gone. Take in the tree in the rotunda of the State Capitol - it's beautiful. If the weather is really nice you can check out the zoo, it's free.

As for snowshoeing - I don't know how much snow you need for that. If we have enough to cross country ski, then your best bet would be the Arboretum on the south side of town. I think that some of the golf courses also allow skiing.

Your best bet is to grab the weekly Isthmus when you get into town. It's free and available at most restaurants, hotels, etc. They have a very comprehensive listing of entertainment of all types in the area. You can check it out early at http://www.isthmus.com/

Another webs to try is www.madison.com and www.channel3000.com.

Have a great time and come back to tell us about your visit.

Forgot to mention the Holiday in Lights disply in Olin Park. It's a drive through holiday display of lighted and/or animated decorations. Very beautiful if there's some snow to add to the ambiance! It's located on the west shore of Lake Monona.

Even if you can't snowshoe, there are a couple of really great outdoor spots to visit . Either Devil'[s Lake State Park in Baraboo or Blue Mounds State Park, just west of Mt. Horeb. We always take guests who enjoy the outdoors to these parks and we've never been disappointed.

I snowshoe at Governor Nelson State Park (on the north side of Lake Mendota) or at Devil's Lake. Depending on whether we get any snow, of course.
