shopping and tailoring

Hi, we are first time travellers to Bali, heading over to The Padma end of march for 7 nights.

We would like some clothes made.. and other general shopping...any suggestions which direction to head would be helpful...we don't know one street, or suburb from another.

I notice this is your first post on this forum! Welcome!

The Padma is a lovely hotel, and close by are shops, shops and more shops, and restaurants etc.

General shopping, you can go to Kuta Square, Centro, Galleria Mall these places are dedicated shopping precincts rather like Morley galleria (only apart from Centro) on a smaller scale. The shops here are fixed price and you will find almost everything you want.

There is Carrefour on Sunset Road, imagine a Coles,LiquorLand, K-Mart, Officeworks, Retravision on one floor!

Do not worry too much about knowing how to get to these places. Hop in a metered taxi and tell the driver "Kuta Square please". Easy as that.

For tailors and the like, up the forum page is a blank box type in "tailors" and you will be directed to previous posts on the subject.

Also on the top right hand side of the main Bali Forum page is a box with lots of good advice on taxis, shopping, places to see etc.

Most everyone here are only too happy to help! Feel free to ask away!

Ok......have a look at this map. It is of the main Kuta/ legian area. You can go many places in Bali (Denpasar shopping, Sanur for lunch on the beach, Ubud etc ) but this is the vicinity of where you will be staying.

top left you will see a fish...a bit under that is your hotel.

Under that again you will see a Legian beach sign. To the right of that is melasti st. There is a street that runs from melasti st back to jalan Padma and that is called jalan Sahadewa/ garlic lane (it's not named on that map). it has good shopping.

On Jalan Padma just past that lane and opposite Casa padma hotel....is a tailor called House of Komang.

If you look North of your hotel and to the right you will see Je je's .....there is a lane around there called 3 brothers lane and that has a tailor called Brisbane Tailor.

More shopping.........look south on your map and down the bottom left you will see a surfer. To the right of him you will see art markets (shops 111 and 39 are both fixed price if you ask) and up a bit further is kuta square....with boutique shops and Matahari department store.

Look south of the surfer and you will see it says centro discovery mall.....thats a more upmarket shopping centre. Waterbom park is opposite (you can get a pass out).

Basically the main road starts down from discovery and goes up past kuta square, up the beach road.....around into melasti st and then when it reaches Jalan legian you can go left and up to jalan padma.....around into Padma Utara past your hotel and then around into rum jungle road (where you see the jayakarta hotel) and back to Jalan Legian.

You can then go left and further north again to Seminyak (bintang supermarket, Carrefore dep store and loads of markets and boutiques) or you can turn right and come on back down to Kuta square past loads of markets and shops.

You can walk from Seminyak down to kuta along jalan legian stopping and browsing.......but taxi it up the beach road.

2 other places well known for cheap eats and shopping are poppies lane 1 and poppies lane 2.

They both run off the beach road right to Jalan legian.

Poppies 1 is to the right of the kuta beach sign on that map.

Poppies 2 is up a tad and to the right of the kutaseaview cottage sign.

The traffic runs one way up that beach road though so perhaps enter those lanes from jalan Legian and then when you come out the other end you can jump in a taxi and go back up.

Print that map and maybe laminate it.
