6 day trip to Kerala next week - need suggestions!

Hi,

I'm traveling with family to Kerala - third week of August 2013. We have 3 nights in Kochi, potentially one night in Kumarakom/Allepey and two nights in Trivandrum. Plan to hire a cab to drive us around.

I'm currently planning this:

1. day 1 kochi to guruvayoor and back

2. day 2 kochi local - suggestions for things to do? We're interested in culture/history. Also, any suggestions for good restaurants? (we're vegetarians!)

3. day 3 somewhere around kochi, probably athirampally -

4. day 4 drive to kumarakom - thinking of hiring a houseboat for the night stay. Any suggestions? Just looking for a decent and CLEAN houseboat not necessarily too fancy

What are some interesting things to do near Kumarakom/Allepey (now that I know we'll miss the nehru boat race) Are heritage homes a better idea for stay? Open to doing a kumarakom to allepey night cruise if advisable.

5. day 5 drive to trivandrum - local sightseeing

6. day 6 potentially drive to kanyakumari and back. leave for home next day.

Is this a feasible plan? Or would it be too tiring? Appreciate suggestions on other/alternate things we could do especially for days 3 and 4, in allepey/kumarakom.

Thanks!

You should interchange day 2 and day 3. It is better to stay at Atirappilly when you return back from Guruvayoor instead of travelling all the way to Kochi. You will save time spend on travelling 140 kilometers to and fro.

If you are not planning for an overnight stay in Houseboat and is planning for Kumrakom on Day 4, it is better to stay in a backwater facing resort or a heritage homestay. HOwever what I would recommend is overnight stay in houseboat which is a unique experience than the resort.

Hi there- I would recommend dropping Trivandrum, it's a long drive away (4-5 hrs), think you can use your time better around Alleppey and Kumarakom itself.

Days 1-3 - In addition to Guruvayur walk around the historic Mattancherry and Fort Kochi quarters. TO quench your history interests, visit Mattancherry Palace (Mattancherry) and Hill Palace (Tripunithura). There are some firms providing heritage trails in Cochin, you can also choose to make a pick from them. Also take a ferry to cross-over to Ernakulam or Fort Kochi (depending on which side you are staying) along with the locals, its fun! At Ernakulam, Coffee Beanz is a very good place for food, try their Appam and Veg stew.

Day 4 - a houseboat stay would be fun. Do note that on the houseboat the total cruise time is only around 6hrs, rest of the time the houseboat will be anchored to the sides of the lake. Most houseboats don't have a TV, but good time to chat-up with family and entertain yourselves. River Escapes (search on TA) is a well know and reliable provider, but check for availability. Alternatively you can arrive at Alleppey, inspect the houseboat in-person and then board.

Day 5,6 @ Kumarakom - visit Bay Island Driftwood Museum and also 1/2 day Village Life Experience arranged by Kerala Tourism. If you would like there is a nice temple at Alleppey - Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple. The idol at Guruvayur few centuries ago was shifted to Ambalpuzha to protect it from invaders.

Please note, it has rained a lot in Kerala this season. Many parts of Alleppey, especially the Kuttanad belt is under-water. It's possible by the time you guys reach here the water could have receded, but that is if the rains have slowed down. So when you book your stay in Alleppey or Kumarakom check for the water levels at those places. In the rains, especially when it has rained heavily, I think it is best to pick a resort so that there are things to do within the resort, just in case you get caught in the rains. Keep a tab on the news for the rains.
