Scenic Drives

We will be coming up the last week of September and first week

of October are all the roads open for driving on the scenic roads?

Also is Gooseberrly Falls open? We are coming for the fall colors.

Heard 61 was closed in spots, is this true? Any and all help would

be appreciated. Thank You for any help.

Thank You so much for all this information. It is a big help since we don't know the area and want to do as much as we can, which is helpful with people like you to help us plan our trip. We will be sure to go North but Oberg will not be possible, because of the hike but we will do all the other things.

Oberg would definitely not be a hike for you, (beautiful as it is). Palisade Head would be perfect, you can drive right to the top, and park by the edge for a wonderful view of Lake Superior, and Shovel Point up the shore. It is easy to miss, start looking for it after you pass thru the signal light at Silver Bay. It's a couple of miles up the road. After you pass the Americinn Hotel, the road curves, you will see the Palisade Baptist Church on the right, slow down, it's just after that. There is a small sign and a parking lot at the bottom, drive thru the gate and go UP the road, it is basically a single lane 2 way road.

Plenty of waterfalls along the drive up the shore. Beaver River in Beaver Bay, and the Cross River in Schroeder, have the most accessible waterfalls, just park on either side of the bridge and walk out on the bridge, (there are sidewalks).

Also if going up to Grand Portage, don't miss the new lookout/wayside rest on top of Mt. Josephine. The views from there over the Susie Islands can't be beat.

The hike to High Falls in Grand Portage State Park may be to much for for your husband, but it is handicap accessible, so I'll leave that to your discretion.

A drive up the Gunflint Trail out of Grand Marais is always nice, be sure to go all the way to the end and drive thru Trails End Campground. Swing into Chik Wauk Museum, (this is where all the Hamm's Beer commercials with the bear were filmed.) Stop off at Trail Center for lunch and or pie.

Glad to be of assistance. Enjoy your trip, and feel free to ask if you have more questions. Give a trip report when you get back.

I meant to include a link to Grand Portage State Park. The High Falls trail is 1/2 mile long, and the falls are the highest in MN.
