It's nice but it gets full fast. There is a beach, stones to pebbles, hard on the feet and the water although clear will put you into thremal shock. Great jumping off point, lots to see. Gunflint trail is beauitful drive. hope this helps. We go up every year, camping is not our bag, we stay at a little cabin right on the lake, no one around lou

What cabins did you stay at and how much a night were they? Does anybody else have any recommendations on inexpensive cabins to stay at close to Grand Marais?

Thanks

Never stayed there, although I've driven through several times and have spent time in Grand Marais. The pool in the campground is older, and during the warmer months the whole compound is very busy.

I can't make any recommendations for cabins, but look around Lutsen, or if you'd settle for a hotel then consider Grand Portage Hotel & Casino, they've recently re-done most of their guest rooms. It's about a half hour North of Grand Marais, and is about five minutes from the boat that travel over to Isle Royale.

I stayed there a few times, a few years ago, in their primitive campsite area. It's a great area if you want to get up, grab a bite to eat and get some shopping done. It's family friendly, as well. Here's their website, if you haven't looked it up yet: www.grandmaraisrvparkandcampground.com

I personally prefer Judge Magney State Park, Cascade River State Park or Tetteguche State Park, but that's just me.

It may all depend on how you are planning to camp: with an RV or without?

Thats okay its a good topic to keep up--anytime. I get to

Duluth but never continue farther north. Duluth is awesome enough, but going to the north shore would be a good trip this summer. I would like to check out Split rock light house and more along the north shore. RV'ing sounds great or camping in the parks.
