Driving from Brooklyn to Philadelphia

We are 3 Australians planning our holiday is the USA. our first port of call is a 10 day stay in Brooklyn where we hope to explore this area and the other boroughs of New York on foot and via the subway system. After this we are planning to hire a car and drive to Philadelphia.

This is our 2nd time in the USA, last time we explored the west coast, so we are 'slightly' familiar with driving in the states.

Can anyone give us any guidance or advice re how difficult will it be for us to find our way out of Brooklyn and towards Philadelphia.

It's very easy. You just have to get to New Jersey and take the turnpike to Cherry Hill, and then pop across the Ben Franklin Bridge. Getting out of Brooklyn will be the most complicated part. I assume you'll have a map?

One way car rentals can have expensive drop off charges in the U.S. Have you looked into simply taking the train from New York to Philadelphia? Depending on what you're doing there you won't necessarily need a car in Philadelphia.

You can always rent one there, either on arrival or departure. Where are you heading after Philadelphia?

It is very expensive to rent cars in NYC and certainly not worth it for the 2-hour ride to Philly. Check out BoltBus and Megabus or Amtrak (buses are cheaper).

It's a lot easier to take the Amtrak regional train from New York's Penn Station (connected to easily from many subway lines). And it would be less than renting a car, paying the tolls, paying for gasoline, and discovering you are in a city in which the famous and interesting things are in a 1 x 2 mile area. And the Phildadelphia Market Street and Broad Street Subways go to almost all of them.

But no matter where you start in Brooklyn, your best way to go to Philadelphia is: get to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island. The Belt Parkway west from southern Brooklyn and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (Interstate 278) south from northern Brooklyn go there. Then follow 278 west through Staten Island to 440 South (the West Shore Expressway). 440 goes into New Jersey via the Outerbridge Crossing. (You could have gone straight along 278 into NJ, but this saves 3 exits of tolls and traffic). Take the New Jersey Turnpike south (to Camden). Exit at Exit 4. Take 73 North, then 38 west, which merges into 30 west over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge right into Center City Phildelphia (that's their way of saying "downtown").

Where are you starting in Brooklyn? I can describe how to get to Penn Station by subway or the V-Z bridge.

As a Brooklynite, let me give you some advice: Don't do this to yourselves!

First of all, you can take an inexpensive Amtrak train from Penn Station in Manhattan to Philadelphia.

If you want to stop and see things along the way, I recommend taking public transit from Manhattan to Newark (New Jersey) Airport and renting a car there. Rates will be cheaper than if you rent the vehicle in New York City.

To drive from Brooklyn to New Jersey, which you will have to drive through in order to get to Philadelphia, you will either have to take the Verrazano Bridge (which is a cool experience, but it is expensive!) and then face the hell that is Staten Island drivers (worst drivers in all of New York City), or you will have to drive through Manhattan and possibly sit for hours in traffic.
