Ok ... been there, done that! I'm back. The Holiday Inn Cherry Hill was VERY nice, very clean, only drawback is there are train tracks the other side of the parking lot. Good news, it's used infrequently for freight and the occasional SEPTA, not too bad. Very easy access to Philly, about 20 miles from the Ben Franklin Bridge. Philly was your typical big city - hot, humid and full of crazy drivers! Expensive parking lots. As I said, typical big city. I'm not big on big cities, so I pretty much avoided the downtown area after the initial gawking. I took the advice from a previous poster and found Morris Arboretum. I discovered with pleasure they're part of a reciprocal program which includes about 100 gardens and arboretums across the country and which I am a member of one here in Chicago, so I got in free (otherwise $10, $9 for AAA). Very nice and worthwhile. I also saw Chanticleer, very pretty estate and only $5 to get in, nice gardens. I spent an entire day at Longwood, about 12 hours. In the summer on Tues, Thurs and Sat they have a light show with music at the main fountain at 9:15 and stay open til 10:15, so I planned for that and it was definitely worthwhile. The other days I drove away from the city, one day I spent up in the Poconos area hiking Bushkill (very, very cool with excellent waterfall viewing, but if you're not in good shape take the green trail!), and driving up to Sandy Hook national rec. area which was an extremely excellent area for birdwatching and shell collecting. I also spent an evening in Atlantic City, NOT gambling! but walking the boardwalk and buying souvenirs. It's quite an experience. My last day I attempted to find as many lighthouses as I had time for, I found two before I figured out there weren't enough hours in the day to find them all! I got on the turnpike and headed to Cape May so I could photograph that lighthouse before dark. Piece of advice - if you're photographing, Cape May should be first on your list because the good shots are facing west. Most of the other lighthouses were on the west side of the street - NOT on the beach as one might presume! - and could have been photographed in the afternoon light. All in all, I put about 1100 miles on the rental car and had a blast!
