I will be travelling with my wife and 5 year old to Manzanillo, Mexico from Denver, CO. I will cross the border at El Paso. I will be staying for 5 months. Which border crossing is best in El Paso? I will just have my Subaru with clothes, laptops, a Thule on the roof, no trailer. Suggestions?

Not sure on this, but I recommend you avoid Juarez. There have been more than 700 homicides so far this year in Juarez, Mexico, the city of 1.7 million just across from El Paso. With this staggering number I'd try a safer place to cross in the state of Chihuahua. I also read in the El Paso times recently about a young boy killed from this city during their family drive south of the border (attempted robbery)- and I've only been in El Paso a little more than a month. Not sure what your plans are, but attempt to stay away from Juarez (last I got Amnesty International was down there as well trying to figure out why so many women have been murdered over the past 10 years).

I agree with Army Dude. Avoid Juarez if at all possible. Definitely do not use the main crossings from El Paso to Juarez. You will wind up in some of the "hot spots" for drive by shootings. And yes there was an 11 year ofd boy from El Paso killed in an attempted armed robbery driving thru Mexico. Check with the US State Dept for advisory warnings.

I feel bad for the merchants that depend on tourists for their business. But not enough to go over there.

I used to take small groups of soldiers and/or family members, but no more.

Thanks. This settles it. I'll go a completely other route and cross at Nogales, AZ and take the more "Gringo" route through Hermosillo, Guaymas, Mazatlan, PV, Tepic, Guadalajara and over to Manzanillo.

Much appreciated.

Rick
