Hopping has these drawbacks: lots of stops to discharge and pick up passengers; wait time to pick up the next bus; if you want an overview, the time devoted to stops and waiting detracts from the time available for the bus to show you the part of the city that interests you. For tours, seriously consider the DOWNTOWN bus tour of Manhattan. A city-wide tour consumes too much time, costs more, and does not have the same concentration of interesting sights and neighborhoods as the DOWNTOWN tour. (Many of the buses begin and end their trip near Eighth Avenue and 44th Street. Across the street is Shake Shack with excellent burgers and french fries, hot dogs and shakes. That makes a nice lunch.)
