Brooklyn Promenade is the spot to take the quintessential photo of the downtown skyline plus Brooklyn Bridge.

I think the best is from Hoboken or Jersey City. Take PATH train and walk over to Frank Sinatra Park or Stevens Institute or W Hotel (Hoboken) or Exchange Place (JC).

NYNM, I hope to find out in December! I hope it's not too much of a schlep though.

Its not a big schlep at all. You just take the PATH train, and its only 5 -10 minutes from Manhattan! Check the map, because there are two different lines, one to Hoboken and one to JC. (although at certain times of the day/days of the week, they overlap). You also board them at different stops in Manhattan - see below link:

http://www.panynj.gov/path/maps.html

The JC stop - Exchange Place, the view is right behind you as you get out of the train. Here are views from the Hyatt, right next to train station.

In Hoboken there is also an immediate view, although a 5 min (or less) walk to the park. If you go up to Steven's Institute (a great view because it it on a hill) its about 10-15 min. walk - not great on a cold night.

Here are some views from Hoboken:

It's not much of a schlep then and the views are worth it. I was going to combine it with a visit to the Empty Sky Memorial in Liberty State Park in NJ and that sounds like a bigger schlep because there is more walking involved. That part I might have to forego, especially in winter.

The Steven's Institute is a university so I thought the grounds might be off-limit to tourists? I have done a street view walk around but it's hard to see exactly where to go. Do you know if anyone can just go in and wander the grounds to look at the view and take photos?

I will post a picture if I can and if I remember.

You can also take the subway or the tram over to Roosevelt Island, for dramatic pictures of midtown Manhattan.

YEs, the Stevens campus is open to the public (at least they were last year). You should go up the hill there to Castle Point where there is an old cannon and fabulous views:

The Roosevelt Island idea is also excellent, the opposite side view of Manhattan. (see slide #3):

Another option is the Promenade at Brooklyn Heights.

You also can take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry at night for some great views (I don't know if you can use a lot of photo equipment, but a hand held DSLR is fine).

Brooklyn Heights Promenade was where I attempted to take night pictures. Great views, shame the camera batteries died at the wrong time!
