Weekend Apartment Rentals

Hello, hopefully someone can help me with this one.

My wife and I travel to NYC often--we live in Washington, DC. We used to sublet the apt. of an acquaintance we had there for about 125 a day. We liked the set up, the flexibility with arrival and departure times, and the fact that we knew the person and therefore there was no issue of scams.

Recently, however, she has moved away from the city. Looking at various sites--craigslists, etc, ended up in a lot of wasted time and suspicious places.

Does anyone know of a company or agency that handles rentals like what I describe above in town?

Any help and suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you read the 2nd Question down on the FAQ's on the right hand side of the page, you'll learn that Vacation Rentals are illegal in NYC, or at very best, as you've found, time wasters, or outright scams.

Hotels are the best best. Always will be

Local laws in New York City prohibit such rentals here for any period less than 30 days. This means that just about every single advertisement you see on any site anywhere of a "vacation apartment" in New York City is advertising something prohibited by law. This means that what is being advertised is either an apartment being offered unlawfully by the landlord, and that the city may shut it down at any time, or is being unlawfully offered by the tenant, and the landlord can shut it down at any time, or else is simply a complete scam and the apartment does not even exist. In any case, you will always run the risk of being tossed into the street, with no refund.

FORGET about renting a vacation apartment in NYC; you simply will not find a legal option. Instead, look at one of the apartment-style hotels, such as the Affinia group, or the Radio City Apartments.

Thanks very much for both responses. We were completely unaware of such laws.

If, by any chance, then someone knows about an _affordable_ and reputable company that offers such rentals, we'd be very appreciative, besides, of course , the ones already mentioned, which are a bit out of our price range.

Thanks again in advance

What is it about illegal you don't get? There are quite a few legal suite hotels that provide the equivalent of an apartment with kitchen and some extra space.

are a few examples as well as the

group of hotels. For just an affordable place to stay for a weekend, the specials on

and bidding on Priceline are your best bets.

What's your price range? $125 a night isn't really a realistic budget unless you get some special deal, though there are some hotels in Long Island City (section of Queens, which is NYC) that may be close to that. Depends on when you're coming as well. Just like DC, certain times are more expensive than others.

You are looking for a reputable company that does something illegal?

As there are practically no legal short term vacation apartment rentals, this means that practically NO company that offers such a thing is "reputable".

It will be very difficult to find anything for under $125. in Manhattan unless you are coming during a seriously slow period and you bid on priceline.

The hotels in Long Island City are right near a busy subway station and it is one stop to Bloomingdales and the East Side of Manhattan. Two stops and you'll be in Central Park. Three stops for Carnegie Hall. Four stops and you are in the upper part of Times Square. These hotels are fairly new, well-situated, they represent great values, and they're in the real New York City (they're simply not on the island that is Manhattan).
