Short trip to New York |
|
Hi, Next week I'm going to New York for a conference held at the Roosevelt Hotel (Madison at 45th). Can you suggest any interesting short visits and urban attractions in the area, I'm a village boy so I'd love to see the hectic New York life. I'd also love to shop for some electronic gadgets are there any recommended shops? Thanks, Mike Report as inappropriate |

Walk one block to 5th Avenue, walk north and you will be very close to: St. Patricks Cathedral Saks 5th Avenue Trump Tower Tiffany's Beginning of Central Park @59th Street. Or, walk south on 5th Avenue, pass the main Library @ 42nd Street, continue until 34th Street and there is the Empire State Building. Or, walk west to Broadway/7th Avenue and you will be in the heart of Times Square. Electronics - B & H Photo - 34th Street @9th Avenue (check the schedule on their website, they close for Jewish holidays and the Jewish Sabbath) Report as inappropriate

NYCgirl has given you great advice. If you want an ipod, the Apple store in Soho (downtown) is a good place to go. I'm sure they have them at B & H mentioned above, but the Apple store may have a bigger selection. Prices will be the same. Soho is a totally different feeling area since it was first a commercial manufacturing area that then became an artists' area with lots of galleries. You might like to see a show on Broadway. Doubt is a terrific drama that's won lots of awards and might interest you. It's usually available with a discount from broadwaybox.com. Report as inappropriate

All good advise previously and do not buy any electronic equipment in the stores in Times Square. Report as inappropriate

There's a lovely restaurant on Madison Ave and 30th Street called Meli Melo. Wonderful French-ish food! You can eat solo at the bar. Great cosmopolitan atmosphere without being stuffy or snooty. The desserts are fabulous (esp the apple tartin) - even lowly ice cream is presented beautifully! Search for their menu and reviews on Menupages. They might be closed Mondays. Thanks for all the suggestions I'm sure I'll find them useful. I've looked up the dining areas in the area on Google earth and I was flabbergasted. One thing is certain; I'm not going to starve! It seems that there are quite a number of Japanese restaurants around, can anybody recommend anyone that isn't too expensive. Cheers, Mike Report as inappropriate
