 4th of July Fireworks Update

As many people know this year's annual Macy's fireworks show will take place on the Hudson River to celebrate the 400th anniversary of its discovery. There will be six barges places between 24th and 59th Streets.

Keep in mind that the public viewing areas get extremely crowded, so arrive early (well before 7 pm if you want a decent spot) and bring chairs or a blanket to spread out and whatever other supplies you need to enjoy the wait (water, food, iPods, etc.).

Public viewing will be best on the West Side Highway and surrounding area in Manhattan, 12th Avenue and the northbound lanes of the West Side Highway between 23rd and 59th Streets will be closed to traffic for public fireworks viewing. Pedestrian access to the viewing area will be via the following streets: 24th, 26th through 30th, 34th, 40th through 44th, 47th through 52nd, and 54th through 57th.

New York City parking guru Gridlock Samsays the best viewing area will probably be south of 42nd Street along the pier by the Circle Line. Other prime West Side public viewing spots include:

Dewitt Clinton Park (access from 11th Avenue)

Pier 54 (limited access from 14th Street)

Pier 84 (limited access from 44th Street)

Selected side streets between 11th and 12th Avenues

According to Macy's, the following West Side spots will NOT be open for public viewing of the fireworks: Battery Park, Battery Park City, Hudson River Piers (except Pier 54 and Pier 84 as described above, the Hudson Park Promenade between West Houston and 59th Streets, and the Hudson River Park Bike Path between West Houston and 59th Streets.

Hmmm.. this kinda puts a wrench into my plans to watch the show from TOTR. Or is that still a possibility? I'm not looking for a clear sight line as much as a great photo opportunity to capture the skyline at dusk and then with the fireworks.

TOTR has an excellent view of the city and the Hudson River and you'll still be able to get a decent view of some of the fireworks from there...that is if you can get a good spot up there as I'm not sure of anticipated crowds up there or restrictions that night - check out the TOTR website.

any feel for how early they will be blocking off access to Hudson River Park? That's my normal Saturday spot!

I've talked to TOTR - they have no special admittance for that evening. As soon as we get to NYC, I'm going to reserve my admission for about an hour before the fireworks so I can get those classic NYC at dusk shots, too!

Wheeeeeee!

For visitors just saw the local weather report and they are predicting 83-85 and sunny for the weekend.

Should cool down to about 70 for the time of the fireworks... enjoy.

As a tour guide, I'm on TOTR's email list -- This is the statement they just sent re: the 4th:

Top of the Rock Observation Deck will be open from 8:00AM - 12:00AM on July 4th, 2009. We are looking forward to welcoming all visitors who would like to celebrate America's birthday on our decks. You are no doubt up to your ears in questions about the Fourth of July, particularly pertaining to the best places to view Macy's Fireworks Spectacular. As an observation deck in NYC we have certainly fielded that question in regards to our view and wanted to share our official stance with you.

In past years, Top of the Rock has enjoyed a limited view of the fireworks display from select vantage points on our decks. However, this year, with the fireworks being set up on the Hudson River, we have absolutely no idea what view we will have from our decks. It is our personal opinion that the West Side location will provide a somewhat better view of the display, but until we see it with our own eyes it is impossible to be certain. Thus, while we are keeping our fingers crossed, we are not guaranteeing a view of any fireworks to potential visitors. Additionally, keep in mind that the decks will be extremely crowded between the hours of 7:00PM - 10:00PM on the Fourth. Guests who may have issues with crowding and/or standing should be advised to visit us at another time. Please share this information with your guests as necessary.
