Hello

Not sure what to do......

2 weeks ago we could get 1.70 dollars to the GBP, now its 1.60.

We only go to NYC in January but don't know whether to get money exchanged now in case it keeps dropping or keep our fingers crossed that it comes back up?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Difficult question that,

we go to nyc on nov 24th but are exchanging some money this week(payday)

we then get paid 2 days before we fly so its a gamble as to what the rate will be then,

TBH though i am not arsed about the rate because once you get to nyc thats the last thing you will think of,

Darren

We're going in April, but the way the pound is dropping at the minute doesn't look good. I ordered some this evening on the M & S (Marks and Spencer)web-site, because the way things are going, I can't see much of an upturn for some time.

The pound has been strong for a few years and now if anything it's returning to closer to normal levels. I wound'nt expect it to start gaining against the dollar anytime soon.

I ordered my dollars through Crown Currency last week for delivery in December and got $1.76 to the pound, which is the best I could find. They update their rates daily so it's worth checking their rates out.

I too am going to NYC in January....I ordered some dollars about 4 weeks ago & the exchange rate was 1.74. I then brought some just over a week ago & managed to wangle a rate of 1.65. I personally cannot se this getting any better, so I'm buying the last of my dollars this month. If I need any more then I can always get them before I go & I'll only need a small amount then so won't be fussed about the exchange rate :)

Hi All,

I am going to New York in December and I have been watching the exchange rate everyday for the last 2 months. I am also an accountant so have kept track on the economy and to be honest it is not looking good. I was waiting for the exchange to get back to 1.7 and then I’ll buy, but to be realistic I will now be happy at 1.6. The buying rate for the US $ is at 1.58 so you would think I would be ok? But in fact that is not the case as our economy is getting worse.

I think the best place to buy your currencies from with the best rates are; M&S, Postoffice & Ice Currency.

Any recommendations or Opinions would be much appreciated

Thanks

Nadine

Travelex guarantees a better rate than M&S. Crown Currency offers probably the best rate around, but you have to order it some weeks in advance to get the best rates.

I'd be inclined to agree with the guys above, crown currency do appear to be the best. However, I went into my local Thomson branch & they matched the offer I had with travelex a few weeks back which at the time was loads better than everywhere else. So maybe it'd be worth shopping around then hitting your local travel agents with your better quotes and seeing if they can match or beat it?!

I travel on Saturday and have got some dollars already but plan to use my HSBC card when I'm there to get more. Hopefully will get a slightly better rate.

Darn this credit crunch!!!!

I'm really amazed by the Brits worrying about a 7 - 8 cent difference in the rate of exchange, dollars vs pounds when the price for goods in the states is sometime 50% less than in the UK....buck up guys - look what the stock markets are going through right now..........if you can afford to travel to the States - you're that much more fortunate than those who can not.

Must admit I agree with Poppa - I'm just going to enjoy myself and I know what I buy will definitely be alot cheaper than it is here in the UK.

Enjoy yourselves.
