 4th of July 2009

Hi,

I am planning a trip to New York next year, nothing concrete planned yet but i've just realised that the week we are looking at will probably take in the 4th of July. I'm a little anxious that a) everything will be shut and b)it will be difficult/expensive to get accomodation.

Seeing all the sights and staying as cheaply as possible is more important than seeing the fireworks, can anyone advise what New York is like around the 30th June -7th July?

Many thanks,

Skeebo

NYC never really 'closes' or shuts down - well, perhaps on Christmas Day it would be noticeable, however due to the diverse ethnic mix that makes up NYC - you'll find lots open on almost every holiday and if the place you are looking for is closed for the day, it'll be open the next.

Don't fret about the place being shuttered, far from it - there will be a lot more open here than in your neck of the woods.

As for accommodation - it would be in your best interest to check some of the hotels listed on this website, to the left of these postings, for rates etc. NYC hotels are expensive to most Europeans, so be aware when checking......

We were in NYC over the 4th of July this summer and there was no noticeable difference except that there were no eveing shows for most of the broadway shows on the 4th of July. Our hotel was not hard to book, but I made my plans in Feb and the price is not any more than what I saw for the same hotel for the majority of the summer.

I have been going to NY on the days around the 4th of July because it is the cheapest time of the summer to travel. I thought also that it would be a more expensive time of year to travel, but on the contrary Americans tend to stay in their family around that date.

I had a super special this summer (134$ for the 6 Columbus hotel on quikbook) and last summer (175$ for the Carlton on Madison on travelzoo).

Go for it..it is a nice time of year to go to NY..well any time of year is incredible to go to NY!

As cricri says, there are usually great sales for the 4th. Many peopel prefer a beach vacation. I'd actually urge you not to prepay or get a noncancelable booking b/c there may be discounts posted closer to the date.

Hi there

Thanks for your post and glad that you got the feedback. I have also been contemplating taking my mum for her 60th birthday and wasn't sure if the 4th July would be good or the weekend before.

So anymore info from anyone else would be welcome

thanks

Well, seeing someone else already dug up this thread, let me join in and say I'm totally surprised at reading this as well!!

We'll be in NY on the 4th of July and I sort of thought hotels would be more very expensive, but this really perks up my hopes of getting a last minute discount ^^

Tina, i'll be staying at the Pod with my nephew. I read you had a good time there....

I'm really looking forward to our stay even with the legendary slow elevators...The lifts in my building are pretty laid-back, so it'll be fun to see which are worse.

If you have any specific tips, please tell!
