I LOVE THIS SITE !!!! I have used it many times often not even needing to post a subject and the info is so good and interesting. Now my question. I'm coming to NY next week with 4 college kids (I'm the mother of 2 of them) and to keep expenses down we're getting one hotel room near Newark airport w/ 2 double beds and a rollaway and we have been told that we can take public transportation to Manhatten. First take free shuttle form hotel back to airport, then take bus (# 63 I think) to Newark's Penn station and then take the Path train into NY Penn station. Has anyone done this before? I've been told the bus is around 1.50 as is the path train ride. I know a taxi, or such would be more convenient and easier, but we are stricktly going on cost savings. We have all been to NY at least 2 or 3 times and we will be there 3 days this trip so we dont have the same urgency to save time so we can see everything. We plan on finally taking time to stroll around Central Park, walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and any other free or cheap things we can do. I work for the airlines, so we fly free. That keeps the biggest expense down. Thanks in advance for any help. Y'all are great!!!!

$1.35 :: #62 NJ Transit bus - EWR terminals to Newark Penn Station

$2.00 :: PATH

The PATH at Newark Penn Station goes WTC.

If you want to go to midtown you need to change trains at either Grove St or Journal Square.

Of course, you could always stay on the PATH to WTC then take the subway from there to wherever you want

you'll want to monitor www.pathrail.com for any news about schedule changes and station closures

Did the PATH go up to $2.00? It was $1.50 the last time I used it, but that was a few months ago.

Nope, it's still $1.50. My mistake.

Actually, Penn Station is 1 block away at Seventh Avenue; it runs the whole distance from Seventh through to Eighth. It should also be noted that even though the PATH station is called "33rd street", the tracks really end at 32nd. If you come upstairs there, you will be in Greeley Square, and you will see the main entrance to Penn Station one block away. The Path station also connects underground to the big 34th Street/Broadway/Sixth Avenue subway complex.

I'm curious.

Is there an underground path all the way from Penn Station to the PATH platforms at 33rd/32nd?

Yes, there is. Is it still open to the public, or indeed even in usable condition? No; it has been closed for years.

I'd check and see how close your hotel is to the Newark Airport rail station -- that would be a much faster and more direct way for you to get from the EWR area to midtown manhattan. Both Amtrak and NJ Transit trains serve the stop day and night - it'll cost ya a bit more, but in my opinion, well worth the convenience if it's close to your hotel, or if they run shuttle buses to it.
