Yes, there are viable and less expensive options in Queens, New Jersey and Brooklyn, but there are trade-offs, too.

One regular on this forum, broadwaynyc, has put together a great website on hotels in New Jersey:

Peruse these posts to get a feel of the pros and cons of staying outside Manhattan, and other helpful hints about finding discount lodging.

Great idea to collect these in one place. I'm sure many people will find them helpful.

Thanks, QB, for including my trip report :-)!! I think it's great that you've compiled a list of threads on this topic. While I agree that one should stay in Manhattan when ever possible, staying outside NYC is a viable option as long as one weighs the pros and cons.

Here is ChipperTex's helpful review of staying at the Farifield Marriot in Asotria, Queens. It is also a great thread on staying outside Manhattan.

As Mrs. ChipperTex says, this place IS NOT FOR THE AVERAGE FIRST TIMER TO NYC, but it's a great $$ deal and great for repeat visitors.

Sometimes you can get cheap deals in the city. It's our fourth trip in Feb next year .We have booked rooms at the Salisbury with Quikbook for $150 a night plus taxes.I have to say though that it sounds like fun staying outside.I'm always up for an adventue and any experience in NYC is a huge adventure.Does anyone have any suggestions for a day trip away by train?

A day trip by train, I guess you could check out upstate new york . www.orangetourism.org. There are plenty of threads on Queens Borough of New York city and such as well.

Hi

Good summary. I just stayed at Quality Inn in Long Island City and I got the hotel room for 160 USD including all the taxes and breakfast and that was about half the price of hotels in Manhattan that I was looking at. And the great thing about Long Island City is that it was only 2 stops from Manhattan on the subway :-)

Regards

Gard
