Beekman Tower - Pre-Dinner Drinks

I'm visiting New York next week with some friends. I have heard that the Beekman Tower has a bar at the top of the building with fantastic views of the city. We arrive Saturday late afternoon and was wondering if this would be a good place to take my friends for a Manhattan Cocktail to get our trip off to a great start. (2 of our group have never been to New York before). Also, we haven't booked tickets for any Broadway shows but I know we can get last minute tickets from the TKTS booth in Time Square. Are you able to purchase tickets for good seats from here, what time do they start selling them and are they tickets just for that day's performance. (We will be in New York for 5 days). Thanks. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Top of the Tower is a superb place to have drinks. However if you're planning to go to a show that night and get TKTS from the booth, you'd better not dawdle too much. The TKTS sold at Times Square booth are only for that day and performance (ie matinee tickets start selling at 10 in the morning and evening performances start selling at 3pm) You can find more info about the TKTS booths here

http://tdf.org/tkts/index.html#

They only take cash and the seats are sometimes great and sometimes not. If you're a large group and expect to sit together, that will narrow your options.

You can get discount tickets ahead of time to some shows without standing in line by using discount codes by registering for free on websites like playbill.com, theatermania.com, broadwaybox.com The savings are not quite as much as at the TKTS booth but you avoid standing in line, not getting what you expect, you can use a credit card.

Thanks for your advice.

We are staying at the Iroquois hotel, 49 West 44th Street between 5th & 6th. What is the best way to get to the Beekman on the metro?

Thanks again for your help.

If you're staying at the Iroquois, it would make much more sense to have your drink at the View at the Marriott Marquis which is a short walk away. You'd also then be across from Times Square TKTS booth. Above at the Hilton Times Square is another option for a view.

The only downside to the Beekman Towers is it's not very near a subway stop AND it's all the way across town on First Ave, almost at the East River. If you want to go anyway, here's the subway map

http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/submap.htm

You can take the E train at 42 & 8th (Port Authority) and get out at 51 & Lex but you'll have 4 long city blocks to walk to First Ave. when you get out.

You could also take the 7 train at Times Square to Grand Central and then either walk from there or switch to the 6 uptown for one stop to 51 st. But the best public transport option would be the bus. You can take the crosstown bus at 42 st and then switch for free to the 15 going uptown (or walk the 7 blocks) or take the crosstown bus at 50th st. which should stop right in front of the hotel. Here's the bus map

Thanks for your invaluable information. Have looked at the Marriott Marquis - sounds just what we are looking for!
