We've stayed twice at Pirates Cove and several times oceanfront in Kill Devil Hills (just north of Nags Head). There are definite advantages to both... At Pirates Cove you can enjoy all of the ammenities mentioned in other posts; at the beach, you may or may not have a pool, but don't have the clubhouse, tennis courts, playground, etc. right in your backyard.

We've just returned from renting Rudder Village #1 at Pirates Cove. It's a 3 bedroom, 2-1/2 bath canalfront house. Especially nice for us was its location across the street from the playground and a two-minute walk from the tennis courts and pool, which you can see from the front porch. We also loved the fact that it's dog friendly and has a gate on the back deck, so our beagle could roam freely and watch other dogs walking, as well as ducks on the canal. Our kids are older, but enjoyed crabbing from the dock behind the house and some of the activities at the clubhouse (iced coffee bar, make your own sundaes, design flip flops, etc.) The drive to the beach is about three or four minutes; we parked at milepost 16-1/2 by the Jennette Pier, which has bathrooms, drinks, and food available. Our rental house had tennis racquets, bikes, a crab net, huge inner tube, and plenty of games, books, and videos available for all six of us.

We've also stayed in the past in Pirates Cove's Bucanner Village, a condo community. Some of the units are sound front with huge balconies overlooking the water. Some of the lower numbered buildings (1 and 2) are canal front; the higher numbered buildings (10 and 11) are sound front with breathtaking views.

You can't go wrong with this community. There are a restaurant, marina, and many ammenities right on site, and there are miles of docks for boating and long walks. Restaurants are close by on the causeway between Manteo and Nags Head, and there is a grocery store very close by in Manteo. Also be sure to visit the Christmas Shop, evening ghost tours, and Festival Park (home of the Lost Colony, Elizabeth II ship, and native American settlement) in Manteo. Ten minutes away is the Bodie Island Light House and an hour in either direction is the Currituck Lighthouse and Cape Hattars Lighthouse. Five minutes away in Nags Head are bumper boats, multiple minature golf courses, Tanger Outlets, etc.... really more than you can do in a week!

Good luck making your decision, and have fun!

Pat

Any other ideas of places to go/things to do in Manteo? We'll be at Pirates Cove in the middle of September - hopefully the water will still be warm enough to swim. If not, what are some other activities in the area?

Has anyone recently booked at Pirate's Cove in the last year for Village Landings #79? We were excited to book this attractive looking home right on the sound until I did a little research on trip advisor, giving some pretty negative reviews :( Now I'm a bit worried, some of these reviews were from 2011 so I'm hoping some of these issues have been addressed. I spoke to a reservation specialist about it and was told we could not change rentals once the booking was made but that all the homes are gone over closely over the off-season with updates made, etc...i sure hope this is true. We rented thru this resort last year but were in a condo in Shallowbag Bay club nex tdoor. It was very nice but could have used a few updates. I realize these home take a beating with tourists, etc...but threadbare bedding and dirty furniture is something I'm not happy about paying big $ for.

I see you resurrected this 3 year old thread. I would not worry too much about reviews, some use them as a way to get revenge and you only hear from the 1 or 2 upset people and not the 1000 happy ones. People that find a good rental don't advertise it much because they don't want the competition next year.

I agree with Dazgal about the negative reviews. This was our first time renting at Pirates Cove condo unit in Buccaneer village #1036 and we are very disappointed with the stay. The carpets are stained, pots and pans all beaten up even non-stick coating has been scratched off. The refrigerator is so old that the door are rusted. The bath towels also do not look clean. The towel rack in the bathroom is falling off as soon as you hang garment on it. The exhaust vent on the over the hood microwave does not work so if you cook something the odor and fumes linger in the condo. The outside deck have cobwebs and dead insects stuck on the wall. Two of the TVs are still small tube TVs. It is the most filthy rental I have ever been in and ended up spending $ 1600.00 for a week. Right now I am stuck here as most of the places have been sold out due to peak vacation time and the management cannot offer the choice where we can switch with another condo as they are fully booked. I feel like I spent $1600 for week for an upper class motel room. I feel like this is just a waste of my hard earned money. If you ever book a condo online with them beware because the pictures look glam on the site but once you get here is when you will know that you are paying a lot of money for a cheap version of the pictures shown on the site.
