That's a nice budget! Check out The Hotel Del Coronado, an oceanfront resort with a great pool, restaurants and spa. Easy driving distance to La Jolla and SeaWorld from Coronado and you can walk to other restaurants and shops from this property also.

Enjoy your time in San Diego! :)

Hi TeVo2 - Welcome to San Diego!

When is this trip planned? Will you have a car?

City stay or Beach stay?

If you stay Downtown SD there is no beach but you can drive to one in about 15 - 20 minutes. If you don't have a car and want to stay in Downtown it will take you approx 30 mins to 1 hr to get to a beach on public transportation. If you stay at the beach and want to go out at night in the Gaslamp in Downtown SD, again, approx 1 hr. Or an approx $30 - $35 cab ride.

What are you looking to accomplish on this weekend?...party weekend, chill weekend, what age group do you want to surround yourselves with, do you mind being around families or would you prefer a more singles oriented environment, etc. ????

If you fill us in on more details, we can probably nail down an area or two for you....Coronado is a different vibe from downtown is a different vibe from Del Mar, etc--which is a good thing as many other areas of SoCal are homogeneous, so you have options and different neighborhoods here....were you planning on renting a car???

More chill than party, but we do want to enjoy cocktails, would prefer less kids, would prefer an area that we can walk or taxi to most things as we haven't decided if we will or will not have a car. Would prefer beach area, but not opposed to city either. Hope that helps!

Also would prefer to be around people our age and this trip is planned for November, before Thanksgiving, probably a Thurs-Sunday!

Well, you really need to decide if you want to stay at the beach or Downtown :) They are completely different types of stays. Pacific Beach is one option and it's very beachy, surf shops, sandy boardwalk, restaurant & bars along the boardwalk. There are a few hotels also on the boardwalk. It does usually have a younger crowd but many of us older than you do go & stay there as well as families.

Downtown / Gaslamp / Little Italy - no beach. But, lots of higher end nightlife than PB. Nice restaurants w/bars, rooftop bars, nightclubs. But, there are still non-fussy nightlife as well. Just a lot of choices. You don't really need a car to stay downtown as there are good public transportation options.

You might also have a look at Coronado but in Nov I think most places will close earlier than in the summer so nightlife choices will be far less than Downtown or PB. Coronado has a very nice beach and village.

La Jolla could be another option.

Coronado could fit the bill from a relaxing standpoint though it never ranks high on one's nightlife list, though there are plenty of restaurants and a few new bars/lounges such as Leroy's have opened up within the past year or two. Clean and safe community, does have potential for families, and a military presence.

Downtown affords you a lot of options, but on the weekends it tends to attract a younger, often very young, crowd with full fledged night clubs being the main attraction (i.e. Gaslamp area) though there are pubs and other establishments. There will be other types of people such as conventioneers and out tourists though many--not all--locals tend to socialize elsewhere on the weekends.

La Jolla or Del Mar might be more your speed...what's not to like about La Jolla--better restaurants than downtown, classy yet not snooty, a couple of places where you can grab cocktails at night while listening to jazz (Amaya, Eddie V's) and some with great views (Eddie V's patio and Georges). More likely to run into people closer to your age and more of a professional crowd. Walkable downtown with art galleries and a shopping district.

Del Mar Village is a very charming and quaint little village where you could dine and enjoy cocktails on the beach (Poseidon, Jakes) and/or have an oceanview from the nearby L'Auberge Hotel or Del Mar Plaza--with restaurants and shopping. A relatively short cab ride (5-7 minutes) would take you to Del Mar Highlands where you have more dining and bar options. Definitely a professional crowd within your age range.

Plenty of options for you--depends what vibe and scene you are looking for.

I would recommend Estancia La Jolla. I live in La Jolla - but have had a girls day there (amazing massages)!

La Valencia Hotel in downtown La Jolla is gorgeous - plenty of places to walk around.

What you do depends on what you guys are into: great hiking, can learn to surf together (I did this in my early 40's with my friends), rollerblading Mission Bay, etc. So much to do (and also the regular touristy places).

I Coronado sounds like a good choice. there is a hotel called Glorietta Bay which is on the bay side but a short walk to the beach in front of the hotel del. you could take a taxi down to the ferry landing which will take you to downtown to explore - not sure how late it runs at night. that way you'd have the relaxation of Coronado but easy access to downtown.
