We are planning a trip to San Diego in early July with a friend's family. We have all together 5 young kids ages 4-10. My family has 3 kids (4-10) and my friend's family has 2 (5-8). We can either fly or drive and have 11 days total. There is just so many things to think about and I do not even know where to begin.
1. IF we do drive, I know it would be a long drive with young kids... so we plan to take some scenic stops along the way. Would it be reasonable to plan 4 days for the drive to SD and 3 days driving back. I am thinking on the first day, we can drive all the way to El Paso (10hours) and stay the night over there, then on the second day, we will drive to Sedona (about 9hours drive?). We plan to stay in Sedona the day after that for the sight seeing. On the fourth day, from Sedona we will drive to San Diego, that is another 7 hours drive. My question here is, does that sound insane? What would you recommend for the place to stay in Sedona, that would be nice/with pools and activity and the kids would enjoy after long drives, but not too far in from our route. What would be one attraction in Sedona that you would recommend that hopefully we have a shuttle to, instead of driving, that we can visit on the third day.
2. Now I need help with planning the itenary for the San Diego stay. We have 4 days there, and would like to stay somewhere close to LEGOLAND, Sea World, Zoo, water park, and beach. I am looking on Flipkey, at a property called "Pacific Beach 3 bed room home". Anyone has been there? It seem to have good review and the price is about $290/night, and do NOt require 7 days stay minimum. Do you have other recommendation regarding the family beaches and place to stay?
3. Another of my concerning is that since we are going to drive with my friends, we plan to rent a 12 seat vans. Would that be hard to drive around San Diego with that big van? I have been to South California and do not like the parking situation. Or, I should have 2 minivan... but then we would not be able to "share the drive" on the long road trip.
4. On the drive back, we probably stop by New Mexico before heading to Houston. Any recommendation there?
Thank you so much for any help... I may have more questions later.
