Visting for 4 nights from the 12/29

We are spending New years in Boston and are visiting for the first time from the UK. We arrive sunday afternoon after driving from New York, we have been looking at putting together an itinerary as a rough guide on where to see whilst we are there.

Any suggestions/recommendations on the below...

We will probably arrive mid afternoon we want to visit the outlet mall nearby and then we are staying at the Westin, Copley Place.

In the evening we are just intending to have a walk around the city to get our bearings and explore

We were looking at walking the Freedom Trail in the morning and in the afternoon taking a look around the harbour area. We were thinking dinner in the North end, we watched Kitchen nightmares and are looking at eating that area most nights?

Heading to Fenway park for hopefully a tour of the stadium, following lunch we are hoping to get tickets to the Celtics v Hawks game. In the evening we have no idea what to do or where the best place to spend first night is...any recommendations?

Walk around Boston Common to clear any hangover heads following which a visit to the grounds of Harvard, then to the Sam Adams brewery tour, Evening spent on one of the Ghost tours and then dinner.

Our final day,we fly back to the Uk around 6pm so we were just planning on a leisurely look around the shops ( if there can be such a thing!)

Is there anything obvious that Im missing?

You might want to check Sam Adams website or call to make sure they're running tours on New Years Day. A couple years ago I went to Boston for New Years and we had to skip the tour because of that.

I was going to say the same thing as the above poster. Jan 1st is a holiday so most likely Sam Adams will be closed. Also, when you say nearby outlets do you mean the Wrentham outlets? If so, definitely stop on your way into Boston since you'll have a car. What are you doing with the car when you get here? You don't need it in the city.

Is there a particular reason you are driving from New York? Taking the train is an easy and pleasant trip.

Note that stores have major clearance sales after Christmas. You may find some great bargains right in Boston rather than heading to an outlet mall. Your hotel is attached to a mall (Copley Place and also Prudential Center). There are also lots of other stores right in the city that will be having sales.

You will also have the opportunity to shop post-Christmas sales in NYC.

As you explore Boston, plan on spending some time in Back Bay (Newbury Street, etc) and also don't miss the Beacon Hill neighborhood.

Lots of the ghost/haunted walking tours do not run in mid-winter. Others may run only around the weekends (e.g. Thurs-Mon). It may take some research to find a tour for New Year's Day.

If you mean the Wrentham outlets, I definitely agree with the other poster that you should head there on your way from NY before you go to Boston to check into your hotel. The outlets are in a suburb, not that close to the city, and if you went to Boston, then back to Wrentham, you'd be backtracking a fair bit. It seems that the city's First Night celebrations are back on now, so there will hopefully be a number of free arts events, fireworks and other outdoor celebrations that evening. The North End is interesting, but there are other good eating areas in the city. The South End, for example, is a neighborhood of quaint brownstones with a great number of interesting restaurants, boutiques and places for a drink. Have fun!

We were going to drive boston via Niagara Falls( I know it's crazy idea) not sure what we are going to do now. We have 2 nights to spend en route to Boston, we are tied into the car and can't get out of it without loosing our money. Will stop at the outlets on the way into Boston and ditch the car

That's not crazy - it sounds like a great trip. one word of caution: Definitely check the weather before driving to Niagara Falls. It's not usual for that part of NY gets extreme amounts of snowfall, so just make sure you aren't driving into a snowstorm.

Some of the best deals on clothing can be found at Marshall's. It's just a block away from the Westin, at 500 Boylston Street. if you watched the TV show Boston Legal, that building should be familiar.

Massachusetts does not tax individual clothing items up to $175. Only the value of an item above that amound would be subject to the 6.25% state sales tax.

Niagra Falls to Boston is a long, long and mostly boring drive.

So, you're stuck with the car for two days. That doesn't mean you HAVE to make the monumental journey to Niagara Falls. Not only is it a very long drive each way, but there is a very significant chance that you will have wintry driving conditions at some point during those two days, especially up near NF. Plus it's REALLY cold in that area!!!

My suggestion would be spend two nights in Newport, RI, but if you give us more info about your interests and what you might enjoy doing those two days, forum members may have additional suggestions. Just don't plan a huge road trip.

Hi we just want to spend two nights on the road between New York and Boston As our hotel is booked from the 29-12-13. We would like to experience the delights of upstate New York and the cultural sights to Boston, we picked Niagara Falls as it's somewhere we always have wanted to visit. Having listened to advice on here we may scrap that idea and head to Rhode Island instead
