trips outside Boston

We will be in the Boston area for a little over a week. We will rent a car when we leave Boston and would like to see the area. We enjoy history, but are interested in everything. We know we will go to Concord/Lexington area and Salem. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We will have about 6 days outside Boston.

Thanks in advanve

1. Re: trips outside Boston

Depending on your interests and how far you would like to drive, my suggestions would be Adams Homestead in Quincy MA (just south of Bostoon), Stockbridge (Norman Rockwell Museum, couple hours west), Wayside Inn & Griss Mill in Sudbury/Marlborough off Rt 20, about an hour west, Newport Rhode Island and historic mansions and if in the summer there is the 'Waterfire' in Providence RI, New Bedford Whaling Museum gets good reviews and you could go there en route to either Rhode Island or Cape Cod. If you like the ocean head down the coast for Cape Cod/Newport and if you wuld like to see 'quintessential' New England head out to Stockbridge and the Berkshires.

Depending on the answer to that question, options may include Ogunquit Maine, Cape Cod, Cape Ann, the White Mountains of NH

If you are interested in history then you must go to Plymouth (America's Hometown). Everyone should experience Plimouth Plantation and the Mayflower II is interesting. The actual town of Plymouth is also worth spending some time in and seeing how the original street of the Pilgrims has changed and visiting the Pilgrim Hall Museum.

North: The Lowell Industrial Revolution National Park and canal tour is surprisingly interesting.

You could also take Rte 1A from Hampton Beach to Portsmouth - The Treaty of Portsmouth was negotiated at Wentworth by the Sea to end the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 - it's along the route.

South: Plimoth Plantation, Newport RI and maybe New Bedford or the USS Massachusetts at Fall River....
