Joe's American Bar and Grill at Dartmouth and Newbury would probably be one place for you to try.

Davio's is not too far from you over by Park Square. It's sort of an upscale Italian steak house. It's not terribly expensive, but not cheap. Don't know if you would consider it mid range.

There's really not much in the way of good Italian in Back Bay. Ciao Bella is on Newbury. It's been there for years, but I consider it pretty lackluster. Stay away from Vinny T's on Boylson.

For Italian, you really should get down to the North End (Italian neighborhood). It is chock full of Italian restaurants and cafes.

There are lots of steak places in town now. Closest to you would be Abe and Louie's on Boylston, Morton's on Boylston, Smith and Wollenky and Grill 23 in the Park Square area. Oak Room in the Copley Plaza hotel. All of these steak places are pretty expensive though.

For Italian I have heard rave things about DaVinci's at 162 Columbus Ave. I don't know if it's "mid-range":

Please give us an idea in US$$ what you consider to be "middle price range" per person without drinks or wine or tip. Remember here in the US we tip at least 15-20% on our restaurant checks, so when you are deciding whether a place is affordable for you you should remember to add that on.

When we are in Florida for the winter these days we have many visitors in town from the UK. The one place they all rave about is the Cheesecake Factory. It makes us smile a bit because it is a chain restaurant that you see all over the US, but since there aren't any in the UK it's kind of unique to them.

There is a branch of the Cheesecake Factory right in the Prudential Center. They serve yummy American food, in large portions, at very reasonable prices (no matter what your budget), in a colorful setting with good service.

The cheesecakes are fabulous. As our British acquaintances say "Cheesecake Factory has the best puddings in the world". We call them desserts here.

It's true that we usually like to avoid recommending "chain" restaurants, but for someone from out of the country, it's new to you. So, I'd recommend you try Maggiano's restaurant. It's good food, in a nice atmosphere and reasonably priced. It's located in Park Sq., which is not far from the Prudential (< 10 minute walk).

For something more upscale and maybe a bit pricier, there's a wonderful Italian place called Erbaluce, which is also in that Park Sq. area not far from the Pru.

Check out the menus and decide for yourself. Erbaluce is fantastic.
