best area to see fireworks/hear pops getting in around 6p.m.

We're planning on going into Boston later in the evening July 4th - around 6 p.m. Any suggestions on where's the best spot to see the fireworks and hear the pops getting there that late? I want to be able to see, hear, and feel the flyover over head too! What's the best way to get around (what streets to go down?) We'll be coming in on the blue line, but could easily access any other line.

Take the Red Line to Kendall and try to find a spot along the river on the Cambridge side.

Nobody else will have the same idea.

Is the Longfellow Bridge going to be closed to pedestrian spectators again this year?

You can walk over to the Hatch Shell at that hour and try to find enough space for two people to sit down until the fireworks. You'll probably be back far enough to be able to hear the Pops on loudspeaker and maybe see them on one of the large screens. The concert begins at 8:30, I believe. Or you could bring a radio (or be near one of the speakers) and stay on the Cambridge side to see the fireworks.

I say this to people every year. For this event, you really need to choose whether you want to see the concert, OR see the fireworks.

The areas with direct views of the concert, in front of the Hatch Shell, and along the river, are not good areas to watch the fireworks. There are tall trees all along the Esplanade river bank that block the views.

For excellent, unobstructed views of the Fireworks, they do in fact, close the Longfellow bridge to traffic, and you can walk up on the bridge (the Boston-Bound side) and have a perfect view of the barge in the river where the fireworks are set off. It's nice because you get the perfect vantage point, and there's a reflection off of the John Hancock tower that is really pretty too.

So they are letting people stand on the longfellow this years? If memory serves me right, it wasn't permitted last year.

Right - there was no viewing from the bridge last year due to the repairs being made. However, it appears that it will be open this year, according to a press release from the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

I asked because I passed by there the other day and it looked like the sidewalk on the "fireworks side" had those orange cones and tape. It happens to be my favorite spot to get a great view. (SHhhhhhhh, don't tell.)
