Visiting late December for 2 nights; where to stay close in?

We hope to be in Asheville in late December and would like to stay in or close to downtown. We probably will wait to see Biltmore another time, and will spend most of our time walking around town.

First where IS downtown? The maps do not identify the area. Second, is there a place to stay -- hotel or B&B -- under $150 a night that is close to downtown? There seem to be only a few hotels listed in the downtown area, at least for our dates. If not downtown, where in the historic (Monford?) area? Thanks for any advice.

I think that it would be a shame to miss the Biltmore Estate in all of its holiday glory! It is one of the foundations of our amazing history around here. Go during the day, and maybe on a weekday, to avoid the crowds. Get the audio tour, you get a lot more information on the history. The National Gingerbread House Competition is held at the Grove Park Inn too, and that is fun to see as well.

Downtown is basically in the center of our town. Check out our visitors website to see everything that you will need -www.exploreasheville.com.

Here is a link to their maps -http://www.exploreasheville.com/about-asheville/getting-around/area-maps/

As for accommodations, there are only a handfull of hotels downtown, and yes, they are spendy. It is also pretty high season (next to October) around here, because the Biltmore decorated is a big tourism draw for our town. So, you won't find cheap downtown. You may either look east of town, near the Asheville mall, there are some chains there.(Homewood, Country Inn, Hampton Inn, etc.) You'll have to drive a short distance and find a park (park in our city parking decks. Many are centrally located).

Historic Montford is just north of downtown, slightly west of hwy 25 (which is Merrimon Ave north of the I-240)

Good source of info.

http://www.romanticasheville.com/downtown.htm

Hotels? The only 2 we stay in are Aloft: (to splurge, very clean & modern)

http://www.aloftashevilledowntown.com/

and Guesthouse Inn (not in true downtown, but short drive, also on a bus route... next to a Steakhouse - inexpensive, breakf. included...)

=== Check the specials, Guesthouse Inn best rate = Manager's Special - call direct. For Aloft: Starwood Preferred Guest rate is usually the cheapest....

Hey Susan, just wanted to add to Purplelady's info--the chain hotels she mentioned on Tunnel Road are very close to downtown. It's about a 3 minute drive on a bad day, so you have plenty of choices that should fit your budget.

Downtown Asheville is the area just south of I-240, Exit 5. Dead center would probably the intersection of College and Lexington - most all of the best of downtown is easy walking distance from this point.

Another good lower price option within walking distance is the 4-Points Sheraton.
