Attractions/Sightseeing on Texas/Louisiana border

I will be visiting Louisiana in March and staying in Leesville about 1 hr. from Texas. Is there any recommended day trips - sightseeing, attractions, etc. that anyone can recommend to me?

Any ideas are appreciated. First time to the area.

Hello, llama --

What type of activities appeal to you? Do you want to visit historical sites, enjoy nature and the outdoors, or do you prefer shopping or the allure of the casinos? You will not be far from any of those in southwest Louisiana!

To enjoy some of what makes this region special, I suggest that you head south into Cajun Country. That area has enough to see and do to make it a destination in itself!

Here are a couple of my favorites:

Visit Avery Island -- home of Tabasco products, the 250-acre Jungle Gardens, and more.

Explore the Creole Nature Trail National Scenic Byway --

Tour Shadows on the Teche -- a remarkably preserved 19th century plantation home and National Trust Historic Site.

Visit Vermilionville -- laid out as a historic village, this Cajun/Creole heritage and folklife park recreates life in the Acadiana area between 1765 and 1890.

Across the state line into Texas, you'll be near the Piney Woods and Gulf Coast regions, Depending on the length of your stay, you may not have time to see much of this area.

Enjoy your visit!
