snakes, spiders, wild animals??

We are traveling to Moab in August and plan to do a little hiking as well as white water rafting. Just wondering if we need to be careful, especially before sunrise or after sunset?

Nothing to be alarmed about especially in heavily populated tourist areas. In 25 years of visiting 4-5 times a year, have never seen a wild animal of concern or a spider. Have definitely seen rattlesnakes but rare. General precaution as with anywhere is to not put your hands somewhere you can't see while hiking. You'll find that snakes and wild animals don't want to encounter you, either.

Use common sense but don't worry.

Have fun. Just had a great weekend there.

Thanks so much. Good to know since my Mom hates snakes, spiders and etc. All we have here in Maryland now are "stink bugs"!!

What you will see, and should enjoy, are geckos. Here's a little guy I photographed this weekend in Negro Bill Canyon. You'll see them everywhere. Fun to see scoot across the rocks. Not the least bit harmful. Enjoy them.

What you should be more worried about is dehydration and sunburn. Take plenty of water (a quart at least a day). If you are hiking in the heat of the day some say a gallon. Wear a hat and plenty of sunscreen along with sunglasses. The altitude and bright sun can give you a bad sunburn and/or other health problems in a hurry. And as Tumbleweed said, look for the little guys. There are some awesome guys surviving in harsh circumstances.

The thing that scared me the most at Arches were the ravens. They seemed to be used to humans and partically flew in our car. I didn't see one snake or spider thank God!

We've had a run-in or two with scorpions...one was the size of my husband's hand! (Luckily, it was pretty slow moving and wasn't aggressive..)

Fortunately the larger the scorpion in Utah the less likely it is to be a serious health threat to humans. However, if you do get stung by one it can be painful (previous experience). One person described it as being stabbed with a hot poker. First aid is to clean the bite site and applying ice will also help. For more info go to www.wildernessutah.com/learn/scorpions.html
