Road conditions Moab to Durango to Ojo Caliente, NM mid Dec

Hi~ :)

I'm traveling from Seattle to Ojo Caliente, NM in mid Dec. Thinking of dropping South thru Boise, Salt Lake, Moab, Durango and then into New Mexico to Ojo Caliente springs.

I've done the the trip almost to Moab before, but beyond that I don't know the roads. Any suggestions on what I can expect?

Thanks!

Beautiful trip. Moab to Durango is pretty easy. Durango to Ojo Caliente extremely mountainous driving. For the entire route, do keep an eye on weather in advance. If it's snowing, it will be difficult. You do also have an alternative from Durango to Ojo, routing via Farmington will avoid at least the mountains around Pagosa Springs. Roads themselves on the entire route are quite good, just watch weather.

Have fun.

The drive from Durango to Ojo Caliente isn't that bad most of the year. From Durango, head east to Pagosa Springs. Then a lonely highway to Chama that can have snow/ice if there has been a recent storm. From Chama to Ojo Caliente is easy, with rolling hills and desert. Hard to tell if Ojo Caliente will have snow, much of New Mexico is facing a dry winter!

Planning to do all your driving during daylight hours gives you a little wiggle room if weather turns on you. Also, much of this area can experience severe winds with storms. So snow could be expected to be blowing or drifting.

Before taking any scenic by-ways CHECK on CURRENT conditions. Always have staples like extra water, food or snacks, blanket or sleeping bag in the vehicle. You may have to wait a bit before help can get to you if you have trouble. Also cell signal will come and go along this route.

This trip is exceptionally beautiful in later summer & fall if you get the chance.
