Things I Miss

I miss:

Canlis wilted spinach salad with real bacon bits;

The "Rat Pack" coffee shop next door where they would plug a phone into your booth (never got a call, but I always hoped);

The Magnins;

German Cook, mostly for the cheesy costumes;

The Haufbrau with sandwiches as big as your head and an honest draft beer;

The press bar full of reporters telling lies;

The ORIGINAL Original Joe's, even if it was in a sketchy neighborhood;

Gumps;

Mayes, with the great waiters and the awful art on the walls;

Trader Vic's, where one drink could make you numb.

Did I miss anything? Please add your most missed favorites.

If you can tell us of new substitutes for any of these, plese let us know, but no "appletini bars" please.

The Christmas tree at City of Paris.

The roof of The Emporium at Christmas.

After work at Paoli's

Pierce St. Annex

Henry Africa's

Gump's is still around -- but I suppose you mean when it was located at the corner of Post and Stockton and I agree with that.

It was always exciting to see what Gumps's would do with their Christmas window.

I'll also add: Ghirardelli Square and the Cannery when they were first converted to shops. There were some very cute boutiques and specialty shops. I recall one dress shop called "Splendiferous!" So sad these areas have morphed into the same tacky stuff as the rest of the Wharf.

The tea room at the St. Francis Hotel (now a bar) The original cable car lines which went into Pacific Heights. Fisherman's Wharf when it didn't have Pier 39, but did have real fishermen in real fishing boats and when you could get a good seafood meal there.

Puter, it's always all about the food with you, isn't it? I do remember the early Christmas tree lightings at Ghirardelli Square before they turned so commercial.

mmmm, the smell of Folger's roasting their coffee beans, the old Espirit factory outlet located somewhere in the China Basin neighborhood, all of The Emporium but especially The Marketplace in the basement. I also miss the flower kiosks that used to be located EVERYWHERE in the downtown area.

The original Banana Republic that actually sold army surplus clothes from around the world.

And ORVIS!!! The greatest sporting goods store ever!

I Magnins and their extremely chic fragrance area, along with their mirrored ladies restroom. That was a sight in itself.

City of Paris was my secret delight.

The original Gumps was a delight and always a SF highlight. The current location just doesn't do it.

Yes, Ghihardelli used to have wonderful little shops with some lovely exotic things.

Harrington's #9 Jones St.

I am talking 1960's. Irish coffee was an art form.
