San Fran and some wine area

Ending our 10 night trip from Portland to San Francisco and wanted to hit up napa or sonoma before getting into the city. Looking for an area to stay in and doing wine country for a day. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!

I am assuming you are driving down 101 - the easiest place to stay would be in Healdsburg. its a lovely winery town with lots (and I mean lots) of wineries close by. If you are traveling mid-week the Best Western is very nice there - with lovely fireplaces, jacuzzi tubs, breakfast, outdoor fireplace, swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam shower, and more.....They usually have very good rates - you would want Tuscan side - not the older side...This is within a mile of town where you could have a nice dinner.

If you want a bed and breakfast both Madrona Manor and Honor Mansion are nice. Or if you want a luxury hotel instead Hotel Healdsburg.

For more information regarding Healdsburg, see

If you would like help on choosing 2 or 3 great wineries to visit - post your question again and let us knwo what type of wineries you love - large, small, unique, what kind of wine etc. Special feature - for example, lovely gardens at Ferrari Cerrano, luxury swimming pool and international bocci ball courts at Coppola, or smaller funky wineries like Hop Kiln....There are just way too many.

For more information see

By staying in Healdsburg, you would get here the quickest allowing maximum time at wineries, shopping, dining, etc.

Of course, there are fantastic places in town of Sonoma and Napa Valley as well...

and I am sure others will chime in with suggestions there.

Have a great trip.

The best advise you would get about Sonoma Valley or Napa valley would be in those forums. So I would suggest you look in those forums as well.

Healdsburg is an excellent choice and a great place to stay to visit the Russian River Wineries. To get to SF from Sonoma, the coastal route is lovely and there is an article in the Top Questions on the SF forum on day trips from wine country -- it has the reverse route as the trip originates in SF but you can do parts of it if you like
