San Francisco for a day

My schedule is tight and will be spending a full day in San Francisco. I am debating staying near airport and taking a cab into downtown area. We have a night visit to Alcatraz scheduled. Any thoughts on staying near airport.

Stay in the city.

Exactly how long us your visit? It sounds like you're spending the night.....

Stay in the city. The airport is 13 miles south of the city and the area has nothing but of cookie cutter business hotels.

Since you are coming into the city anyway you will not save time by staying at the airport. Do you have a flight out the next day?

Stay in the city. Much more fun to come off the Alcatraz tour, walk to somewhere for dinner (maybe in North Beach?), then take a short cable car or bus ride to your hotel for a good night's sleep. Otherwise, you'll be 30 minutes or more from your hotel after dinner by taxi, or an hour or more by public transit.
