Wharf or Union Square for 2 night stay?

We have traveled to San Francisco many times, but always on business...thereby staying usually close to the financial district or union square. We're thinking of staying down by the Wharf this time for pleasure...transportation to and from the wharf seemed always difficult, is it still? Should we stay closer to Nob Hill? We plan on going to North Beach and down to Pacific Seafood Café and take in Chinese New Year in between. Any suggestions. Budget between 170-250/night. no kids.

If you would like to stay at the very touristy FW sure you can do that Depending on where you want to go, there is the F market, cable cars and there are other buses that run close to the wharf but it is not the hub that Union Square is

What would you like to do in Nob Hill ? Sure if you want to stay there, that is fine as well but the majority of the few hotels there won't be in the price range you are looking at. Nob Hill is not the most accessible part of SF except for the cable car.

I am not sure what suggestions you are looking for as no one can guess when you are coming -- since you bring up the New Year which was yesterday, I presume it is soon. Please do look at the SF hotels link, and you can find hotels in your price range for the dates you plan to come.

Most of us don't recommend staying at Fisherman's Wharf unless you have kids to entertain with all the schlock and souvenir shops and etc.

If you are in Union Square you can walk to North Beach and Chinatown and have access to every kind of transportation there is in the city.

Hotel vacancies and prices will vary according to when you will be here. In your price range, start out by looking at the Donatello and the Chancellor. One is modern, one an historic boutique hotel, both are within one block of the Square.

If you've stayed in SF a number of times and would like something different I'd suggest either the Drisco in Pacific Heights or the Inn at the Presidio. They are both on the pricey side but are 10 times the experience you'll get from the Wharf.
