San Francisco in May

Visiting San Francisco for the first time next month. Staying Thursday to Sunday. Would it be better to get a hotel by the wharf or by Union square?

Depends on your interests. Union Square is in the "center" of the city action. Wharf is close to many tourist favorite attractions. You can get around the city easily from both. Families w/kids seem to enjoy the Wharf more. Singles/couples often like the shopping, sophistication, and hotel quality available around Union Square.

What are your interests?

I like the Union Square or Cow Hollow areas best for lodging. Try Hotel Triton or Hotel del Sol--less crowded than the hordes of tourists at the piers and lots of good restaurants within walking distance.

Union Square is ALWAYS the best choice!

This is our first time going in June as a family having to plan on our own (been there once 10 years ago, but with a conference). We have two teens with us. With much advise from here, we decided to stay at the Renaissance Parc 55 at Union Square.

Is right down the road from the Powell Street station and heard good things about the area and where to eat nearby!

See if you can talk yourself into a high floor corner room at the Parc 55. You will be astounded. Large room, wrap around floor to ceiling windows.

I too highly recommend the Parc 55.

If you want something half way between Fisherman's Wharf and Union Square, check out the Hotel Vitale at the Embarcadero, right across from the Ferry Building. Great views of the Bay, you can easily take the F Line to Union Square or Fisherman's Wharf. Very new, modern hotel (think W).
