We are staying on kaanapali and want to do haleakala for sunset. Can anyone suggest what we can do on are way up there? where should we stop to eat, what should we see along the way?? Kudos to you. I've been telling people for years sunSET is way more fun than sunRISE. Aanyway, check out the Kula Lodge for refreshments on your way up or down, and all that Upcountry Maui and the slopes of Haleakala has to enjoy.
First, you could visit the town of Paia...Then make your way upcountry and stop at the Lavendar Farm, the Winery, and have lunch at Kula Lodge. Then make sure you allow enough time to drive up to the summit. There it will be much colder..so be prepared! If you want to do some hiking, allow even more time. Then enjoy! Bring blankets too!
If you are really adventurous, you could go ziplining too!
Agree with all of the above. We did Haleakala sunset last week when we were in Maui (seems like a year ago..sniff, sniff). Loved it! We downloaded the GyPSy app for iphone and it kind of pointed out places of interest/mythology stories along the way. Really cool. Speaking of cool...definitely bring warm clothes. Also, don't be in a rush to leave once the sun sets. We laid back in the convertible and just stargazed until we couldn't take the cold any longer (we're from New Orleans, so man, I hate cold weather). It was one of the highlights of our trip. Two suggestions for restaurants on your way back to Ka'anapali. For an upscale meal, head to Hali'imaile General Store owned and operated by Bev and Joe Gannon who just were recognized with Maui Magazine's "Lifetime Achievement Award"
If you are looking for a more casual yet very well prepared reasonably priced meal, try Cafe O'lei at the Dunes Maui Lani golf course. Both are essentially on your way back to the West side.
Is there an online resource to tell me whether or not Haleakala is covered with clouds? I'd hate to set out on a 2-3 hour drive to see the sunset, only to find that it wasn't visible due to cloud cover.

Bring warm clothes.
The view of the sunset from up there is like seeing it while floating on the clouds.
You can look at all the weather sites you want but none of them can tell you what it will be like once you get to the summit. Meaning, the weather site could say, it will be a clear night, it takes you 2 hours to get up there and when you arrive, all the sudden the clouds roll in. Of course the opposite could also be true. It's just the luck of the draw!!
