Who has the latest scoop on the lodging at the chalets here?
We love Kula Lodge restaurant for the views, good food ... for breakfast, lunch or dinner ... or a nice dessert and hot chocolate by the fireplace.
However ... there are mixed reviews on the lodging choices. Some folks choose to stay here for one night if they are based out of south or towest Maui and want to be closer for the sunrise trek up the summit at Haleakala. We prefer Peace of Maui or other lodging choices in Makawao which are just as convenient for the early morning drive up the mountain. For the hardy, nature lovers who don't mind camping, Hosmer Grove inside the national park is actually the closest place you can spend the night before the sunrise trek.
Some reviewers posit that the mixed reviews may be due in part to which room you choose as well as which staff member ends up assisting you. The lodging here is comfortable, clean and charming. Vista Chalet #1 is a spacious room with nice views [NOT of the parking lot], comfortable beds and minimal traffic noise. An important note - there are NO TVs, phones; NOT a resort ... rather a mountain lodge. Perhaps this is not a good base, esp. if you have kids with you or want to enjoy mostly beach activities. However, to avoid dragging yourself or the kids out of bed at 2 or 3 am for a long, Long drive to upcountry and then all the way up and up to the summit, Kula Lodge may be a good one-night stay choice.
