We just returned yesterday from 11 great days in maui. This was our 8th. trip since '99, we're hooked! In 8 trips, this was our first unpleasant experience with booking our condo, actually, booking it was easy... we were just very dissatisfied with what we received. We booked our trip somewhat last minute, I booked in the first week of Jan. for a Feb.3 arrival, but this is a very busy time of year. The property rental/management lady we usually use, from Remax couldn't help us, as all her units in our price range were booked. I searched internet and found another company, they were very quick with email responses, and friendly on the telephone. The bad part: for some reason, they claimed that they couldn't tell us exactly which unit within our chosen complex, we would end up with, until 3 days prior to our arrival. Well, it's a little late to do anything about it at that point! I was feeling desparate, as I wasn't finding a whole lot available, so I booked with them anyway. I requested not to be on the ground floor, and not near an elevator, I was told "that shouldn't be a problem". Well, it was! We were ground floor, about 15 ft. from the ONLY elevator. The unit was very uninviting (very sparsely decorated, no beach equipment like beach chairs, cooler, umbrella, boogie board) Maybe we've just been extremely lucky, but on every one of our other trips, the condo was nicely equipped. We've stayed at this complex on 3 other occasions, and I must say we were very let down with this unit. Being so close to the elevator (all units have louvered bedroom windows, which face the walkway/elevator area), we got very little sleep our first night, you could literally hear every word spoken, as folks passed by our window. The highlight was a drunken domestic dispute at 4:00a.m. that lasted about 20-30 min. The next morning we headed back to the condo rental agency office(other side of town), to request to be moved. The offer was to move next door, to a completely different complex, which sounded good to us until they told us it would be an additional $569 dollars! They finally found us a Hotel room, at the Mana Kai, same price, but no kitchen, very old and dated room, but we knew with the location of the unit, it should be very quiet. So we spent the morning packing up and moving to our new room. They had to charge our credit card for the new room, and cut us a check for the reimbursement for the original condo(they charged us a $70 short stay fee for that first night!) We were promised the check would be ready monday afternoon, nope! not till friday! Do we still love maui? Absolutley! Will we book a condo again? Definitely! Will we book a condo, WITHOUT pics being emailed to us first, and a specific unit promised to us? Never! This post wasn't meant to be a slanderous rant against one company (no company names mentioned-although I'd like to! : )
Just hope other folks spending a lot of money on a nice vacation, won't make the same mistake we did. Always request pics of the unit (and the location of the unit) before you book it, unless you have no expectations at all. Aloha!
