Hilton Wiakola & Hilo Trip with Kids - A Few Questions

We are heading to Hawaii for vacation with our boys ages 7&9 for the third week in February and we are trying to decide how to structure the trip. We are staying at the Hilton Wiakola and would also like to go to Hilo for a volcano tour.

1.) How long do you think we need in Hilo and what are the best things to do when visiting the volcano?

2.) Do you need to go at specific times to see certain sites and is it dangerous?

3.) Also, do you think we should structure it so it’s on the front or

back end of the trip?

4.) Any specific tour compaies you would recommend for a helicopter or other tours of the volcano?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

We stayed at the Waikoloa area last February and drove over to VNP with a 3year old in one day. It was a very LONG day...we returned at night, which I DO NOT recommend. If you can stay on the Hilo side, you should consider it.

As for the Park, our son loved the Thurston Lava Tube and asked to go through again. We also did several short hikes and enjoyed the steam vents. We did not get to the JAger Museum as he had fallen alseep...but I hear that is fun.

We are planning another February trip again to the BI and plan to go to the Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo this time on our trip to the East side.
